As the title says i just got back from hearing Mr. Obama speak and thought I would share some pics with you all. The first is of my niece and I standing in line, which we did for 5 hours, the second and third are of the masses of people at the rally and the rest are of the candidate himself. Hope you all enjoy.

I would have enjoyed it more if i hadn't stood in the cold for 5 hours to hear him speak outside for 15 minutes and then be told the inside venue was filled:) But all in all I would not have traded it for anything.

He sorta appeared out of now where when i was standing in line so i was about 20 feet or so from the stage he was standing on. It was a neat experience for anyone I think, no matter your political affiliation.

Must admit to hear him speak makes me want to vote for him. Problem is I am informed and know what his views and plans will do to the country.

I will never vote for an extreme liberal or conservative. Nothing good comes from extremes. Moderation is the key to everything, even politics.

Since we are admitting things i will admit that i am not even legally able to vote but I still had to hear him speak. I won't go into my thoughts about either of the candidates as I have learned that politics is the quickest way to start an argument:) but I had to share these pics:)

I had the chance to watch him speak in my town also. I slept in on the saturday it was scheduled, so I missed out. Watching him on TV is probably just as empowering.

Was it in Harrisonburg that you went to in order to hear him speak? How come you are not able to vote? underage?

He was speaking near my office a couple weeks ago and apparently the traffic was a nightmare in the area.

Yes it was in Harrisonburg where I heard him speak. I am unable to vote due to the fact that I am a convicted felon. Before anyone passes judgement let me explain why I am a felon. I am a recovering alcoholic as well as a meth addict. I have 5 and half years sober and clean under my belt yet i still use recovering as i feel that a person can never be fully recovered from these diseases, it is a day to day struggle that one must learn to fight. Due to my alcoholism I was convicted 3 times in a period of 10 years of DUI which led to my being incarcerated for 4 years. I am by no means advocating or saying that DUI's are not serious but I am proud to say I no longer even have the urge to drink or get high :)

Good for you on the recovery, petluvr! I know it can be very difficult.

There was a bill before congress that would felons back the right to vote. Unfortunatly, it would not only give folks like you and a couple of my friends that made stupid mistakes when they were young and foolish, but people like Charles Manson could also vote.

I just had this conversation with my daughter last night. Her fiance is a convicted felon for repeated DUI's and he cannot vote or even qualify for subsidised housing (which they unfortunately need right now!). I feel there should be "leveled felonies" to differenciate between felonies for DUI charges and murder/rape, for example. Not all "felons" are hardened, dangerous criminals and deserve to be able to put their lives back together after they have served their time. Congrats to you petluver on your sobriety!

There is also little need for that kind of a bill since felons can already vote in most states as long as they are not incarcerated.

Thanks to everyone for your kind words. I also agree that felons should not all be categorized the same. I would love to be able to vote and exercise my right as an american but unfortunately due to these things in my past I am not able to. As far as being able to vote as long as you are not incarcerated i wish that was how it worked in Va. I have to wait for 7 years AFTER I get off probation, which will be December of 2010 then and only then can I petition the governor for my right to vote back. Sad but we must pay for our deeds good or bad:)

Yeah, I've been noticing that of late...it used to be that felons could not vote, but in a lot of states, that has changed. Maybe it should change to unincarcerated felons can vote after their parole is complete, et cetera, et voila, we have a national law that makes a bunch of sense.

Well you learn something new every day, I had no idea a felon could not vote, but it does make some sense. I also can't vote, but its because I am not a US citizen.

Glad to hear you are recovering :)

Since you say you are informed I think you could do some good with it. You could use your loss of voting right to teach others about the pitfalls of drugs/alcohol addiction. Call it a foot in the door or an ice-breaker. It gives you reason to tell others based on a "Been there-Done that" experience and not some goody-two-shoes that hasn't.

Not the same reasons as you, my medical condition is my open door to teach and tell others what living through a stroke is like. I spend time with seniors and those going through a traumatic experience, about the need to never give up. Some negative aspects in our lives can be used as a tool to reach out to help others.and do some good from it.

Glad you got to see him and I am surprised that you waited 5 hours for a 15 minute pep talk. Is he really as skinny as he seems to appear? LOL

Congratulations on being sober and Good luck on staying there!

petluvr
10-29-2008, 2:00 PM
Yes, he did appear a bit on the emaciated side but who wouldn't be when you are traveling as much as what these candidates are:) I use my experience as much as possible to teach and inform others, which is why I have chosen to persue my PhD in Psychology so that I may help people who are incarcerated presently. "been there done that" is really a motivational thing I have learned:)

There are only two states which impose lifelong felon voting bans, Kentucky and Virginia.

Where do you live petluvr?

I live in Va. which is one of those states. I do have the option to petition the governor after getting off probation but from what I have heard and read that is VERY unlikely to happen.

That's too bad. In Ohio some judge is forcing the state to let homeless people vote using a park bench as their address!

petluvr
10-29-2008, 2:31 PM
IMO they should be allowed to vote. No different from the rest of us. I wonder if I were to move to another state since i was convicted in Va. would I be able to vote there? HHHMMMM maybe I will have to check that out:)

I agree they should be able to vote, but how do you prove their residency? The problem is that they don't have to show ID or prove they live in Ohio. Anyone could just come here and claim homeless to swing the election.
