The craziest thing just happened. I went for a walk to pick up my wife from a class so she didn't have to walk home in the dark (she called me because she heard some strange animal sounds). So when I reached her I heard the sounds. I looked up in an evergreen tree with my headlamp and saw a couple of HUGE raccoons growling at each other. So I stood where I could get a better look at them (under the tree). Do you see where this is going? All of the sudden I heard a crack and a snap. I started to run since I didn't want angry raccoons falling from trees onto my face when all of the sudden the entire branch from the tree landed on my back in mid run. I'll repeat that because it bears repeating. A freakin' tree branch covered in fat raccoons toppeled on my back in mid run. I pull myself from underneath the massive branch only to see raccoons run away into the bushes. So apparently I fell (pun intended) victim to a hit and scatter. Silly fat raccoons.

A few years ago, when my pond was in the ground, I woke up to the sounds you described - 5 raccoons fighting in a Magnolia tree above my pond. They were raising all kinds of hell. My dog, being the excellent watch dog he is, slept through it all. My pond was the Home Town Buffet on their appointed neighborhood rounds, which included killing cats. But it wasn't enough to just kill my goldfish - they had to rip up all my plants and tip over anything in the pond. I love raccoons. No, really...I do.

My grandma feeds stray cats...which has turned into stray raccoons if she doesn't remember to bring the crunchies in at night. We had a family (mom and 4 babies) get fat off her good graces one summer. They'd come right up to the patio door and watch us while grubbing, and they always had the manners to wash their paws in the water dish. Very cute, but after witnessing a few of their fights I definitely wouldn't want them toppling on me.

oh man, raccoons. love 'em.
i lived in a place where it was safe for my cats to go outside, so my boyfriend and i would leave the windows open at night and the cats could come and go as they pleased. well, it started to seem like they were eating a whole lot more than usual, because we'd have to refill their food bowl every morning.
one night my boyfriend was sitting in the living room, in the dark, watching tv, and a raccoon hops right up into the window and jumps down to the floor. she didn't notice my boyfriend was sitting there until she was a few feet into the room. raccoon freezes, staring at my boyfriend, backs to the window, turns around (still staring directly at my bf), and crawls back out. very funny.
we were BAD people, i know, but after that we fed her outside in her own dish, and soon she had four little babies tagging along behind her. we were able to handfeed the babies, they were really cute. the raccoons got along with the cats, although the cats didn't necessarily get along with the raccoons. they would stalk them and stare at them, probably wondering why they were eating cat food. we gave them dinner scraps too. if we didn't have the food out by the time they arrived, they'd come up to the door and try to turn the handle, or just stick their heads in the window. when they were done they'd go back into the woods, and they wouldn't eat all the cat's food.
the only thing i worried about was coming home late at night and surprising any raccoons that might be inside. they were always very good when they knew you were there, but i didn't want to accidentally corner any of them by getting between them and the window. never turned out to be a problem though. they'd scamper when the car pulled up.

When I was about 7-8 yo I was camping with my dad, forget where exactly it happened, somewhere between Peoria, IL and Denver, Co.
But as we were sitting outside the RV roasting marshmallows a pack of raccoons attacked. trying to keep a raccoon away I pointed my stick (with marshmallow attached) toward the raccoon and ran backwards. Guess when your that age you don't think that those things are after food. So I had a 3 stooges moment as I ran round the campfire 4-5 times with a raccoon chasing the marshmallow before I dropped it and ran into the RV.
Other then that, had a couple of times walking in the allies here in Chicago with raccoons getting spooked and jumping out of garbage cans, not good for the heart.

At first I was in total disbelief that that just happened. I was super glad it wasn't the raccoon itself that landed on my back, those things are vicious.
