SUMTER, S.C. – An ex-convict who thought he was being robbed gunned down a 12-year-old trick-or-treater, spraying nearly 30 rounds with an assault rifle from inside his home after hearing a knock on the door, police said Saturday.
Quentin Patrick, 22, is accused of killing 12-year-old T.J. Darrisaw on Friday night. T.J.'s 9-year-old brother, Ahmadre Darrisaw, and their father, Freddie Grinnell, were injured but were released after being treated at a hospital.
The family attended a Halloween celebration in downtown Sumter, 45 miles east of Columbia, then stopped at Patrick's house because the porch light was on, police said. Another sibling was with them, but wasn't hurt.
Police said at least two of the boys were wearing ghoulish masks when they knocked on the door. The boys' mother and a toddler stayed in the car nearby.
Patrick emptied his AK-47, shooting at least 29 times through his front door, walls and windows after hearing the knock, Police Chief Patty Patterson said.
He told police he had been robbed and shot in the past year.
"He wasn't going to be robbed again, and he wasn't going to be shot again," Patterson said Saturday at a news conference.
She said T.J., a bright young man, suffered multiple wounds, including a fatal shot to his head. No one answered the door at the family's home Saturday.
"This is by far one of the worst tragedies that I have had to personally experience," Patterson said. "It happened basically because kids were out doing what they would normally do on Halloween."
Patrick has been charged with murder, three counts of assault and battery with intent to kill, and one count of assault with intent to kill.
Police said they also charged a 19-year-old in his home, Ericka Patrice Pee, with obstruction of justice when she was caught trying to run away after the shooting with $7,500 in cash. Patterson did not give an explanation for the money.
Pee's 2-year-old daughter was inside during the shooting and is now being cared for by family members.
Patterson said Patrick had multiple drug convictions but police do not believe he was under the influence of drugs or alcohol during the shooting. Authorities did not know if Patrick or Pee had attorneys. Both are being held without bond.
A man who identified himself as Patrick's brother but declined to give his name said in a call to The Associated Press that he believed Patrick was suffering from post-traumatic stress after a break-in last December. The man's account matched the information police provided.
"We want to let his family know that this is a total tragic accident," he said. "He was trying to protect his family."
Patrick's home is off a busy, two-lane road in Sumter, a city of about 40,000 people. On Saturday, shattered glass still covered the front stoop and about 20 bullet holes peppered the front door and a front-window casement. A firefighter used a hose to wash bloodstains away.
The shooting shocked residents of a neighborhood where most people know each other well.
"I just hate it that that little kid got killed. It used to be the quietest place. I knew everybody and everybody knew me," said Vivian Johnson, 81, who lives two doors from Patrick and Pee but said she did not know them.
County Councilman Charles Edens said he lives just a few blocks away and passed the crime scene on his way back from trick-or-treating with his 13-year-old daughter, who was upset by the news.
"It's going to put a dampening on Halloween," Eden said. "I would think twice about going to a door that we don't know who lives behind."

What?
WHAT?

There are so many problems here, not the least being an ex-convict with an assault rifle.

How about. . . . when you leave your porch light on, people WILL knock on your door on Halloween? OMFG look at a calendar, watch tv, turn on the radio. You can't possibly NOT know it's Halloween.
How about. . . . looking outside for a quick peek before randomly firing your weapon THROUGH the walls, door, and windows of your home? You know, in case it's like, your mom or something.
How about. . . . when you think your brother might have post-traumatic stress syndrome (yeah, okay, whatever), you should keep him away from items that he can use to hurt himself or other people, like big guns?
How about. . . if you weren't a lousy drug dealing paranoid nutso creep (because a. you already have drug-related convictions and b. you have $7500 in cash in your house apparently being held by a skittish, police-fleeing 19 year old girl [who may or may not have also been running away with her baby. . . but most likely not]) maybe people wouldn't be trying to ROB you.

I just. . . . I can't go any further than angry sarcasm because this is just a horrible, horrible tragedy. I feel bad for the family, but just as much I also feel bad for the person (monster, now?) who did this. He's 22, been in jail, could have tried to do something and turn his life around. So young. And yet now he has ruined his own life, his family's life, killed a young boy, and ruined the family of that child. In addition, of course, to instilling fear and disbelief into the heart of every parent who reads this story and whose children plan on trick-or-treating again next year.

Sad.

Last year a mother was shot in gang cross fire as she was walking into her house after taking her 2 kids trick-or-treating, happened about 10 blocks from my apartment. We went out early and came home early this year.

Its sad that a tragic event can change a date for ever in a family. Years will pass but the tragedy will be remembered by the family for the rest of there lives on a day that should be filled by fun.

Not safe anywhere anymore and then we wonder why kids stay inside, get fat, and play video games instead of fresh air. . . . . .

excuse me excuzzzeme but not every child who stays inside gets fat, and we really shouldnt be judging this guy because he deals drugs etc. (i know your gonna hate me for saying it but i dont care) sure its illegal but he did what he had to to survive, i mean its wrong to just blindly shoot through walls and such, but just because he was a drug dealer dosent mean hes the worst guy on the planet

Nothing in this thread concerns the cause of childhood obesity.

It is not controversial to say that the discharge of automatic weapons in the circumstances outlined in this news story is impossible to objectively justify.

The purpose of this thread seems to me to be to report a human tragedy and not to analyse 'fault'.

Please bear in mind the foregoing if you are considering posting anything in this thread other than simply reflecting on the terrible loss caused to the victim's family and the tragic death of a child.

Thanks.

A very sad and tragic even for all involved. I don't think that anything has been proved about drugs either way, and I caution to not make judgements either in defense or otherwise.

Yeah, we can leave that up to the media.

I hope the jerk stays in prison for a long, long time.

so would it be inappropriate to give non-media updates as to the progression of things, given i'm sure lots of people are concerned what happens from here on?

Depends buddy :) Use your good judgment and common sense as to whether you should put it up here or exchange pm's with interested persons.

Man, that's just sickening... I can't imagine how I would feel or react if I took my boys up to a door on Halloween night and someone just opened fire through the door on us. Halloween has always been my favorite holliday and is certainly one of the funnest. Thankfully there are other options now besides going door to door in most towns. We took our boys to the fairgrounds were they had a couple dozen gaming booths inside the main building with candy and assorted kid stuff a prizes. With society being what it is, you have to take precations and realize that there are crazy dangerous tweeked out wierdos everywhere you go, and going to a strangers door anymore just isn't a safe thing to do, even on halloween night.

As long as the "non-media updates" are about the family who suffered, and not the drugs side of it, sure...as stated before, use good judgement and common sense.
