Has anyone ever seen these guys? I went to the LFS the other day and the guy had one left. Pretty cool looking and he told me that they were peaceful life the blue rams. Anyone have any experience or more considerations to go over before I get a couple. It's hard to find the info on them on the net. Thanks.

Try looking under balloon ram... I'm thinking that is what he is

I have one in my 30 gallon with a "regular" ram and he gets along great with him and he is also really peaceful

They're called veiltail blue ram or long-finned blue rams. Still blue rams. They're not a cross of anything else. Treat them like you do with the regular blue rams.

if they have round bodies like angels they are balloon rams. they tend to be more fragile than the regular rams (i got five and wound up with one that lived through quarantine)

a lot of people will freak about about their deformed little bodies, but i like them. they arent hybrids, they are bred to show a distinctive trait. it does tend to limit their ability to swim quickly and a lot of people have seen problems with the fish's swim bladder. the one i have left does not swim too quickly, but does not seem to have bouyancy issues. its kind of up to you...

It's a deformity. In an already delicate fish, it's a liability. What bugs me about these beggars is how the trait is starting to be seen in a lot of Ram stocks now owing to crossbreeding between regular and balloon strains, which makes it harder to find natural rams.

Same goes for balloon mollies.

i hate balloon rams badly! the blue rams look soooooooooooo much nicer than them things. i heard that the breeders injected them with genes to create that balloon look is that true? lucky for me my lfs cant get them:) as for ur question its either a veiltail, long fin or balloon blue ram. also inkyjenn what plec is that in ur pic?

Look for the regulars. I've see more of these go down over the past few days since we've got them in the store compared to the normal blue rams.

I have the long-finned variety (of the Microgeophagus ramirezi)and they are far from having rounded or ballooned bodies. If you were to compare them to the Bolivians you would find the bodies to be almost identical other than coloration and fins.

ok understand some members might not like the ballon traits out there but lets keep away from bashing this thread with "i hate them" or "there disgusting"

they arent injected with anything (unless you find a lot thats dyed)...they are line bred to express the shortened body trait which is a defect that appears in a lot of fish if you can be careful about the breeding. they will produce more balloon babies if you breed them to another balloon ram. veiltail i thought was a different trait that is separate from the balloon type

Gah, I misread and posted about balloon rams, not the long finned variety...my mistake. I haven't heard anything negative about the long-finned rams, but again I would still stay away from balloons personally.

When I saw the title of the post "Blue Ram Angelfish' I thought that someone had tried to cross an angelfish with a ram. Don't laugh because just look at the "parrot cichlid" which is a cross between a severum and a red devil (or so it is thought). or the flowerhorn cichlids that are crosses between several different species of cichlids.
