I have recently purchased a wavemaker and am in the process of positioning the powerheads. I have 2 MJ 1200s running off the wavemaker as well as a Koralia Nano running full time. One question I have is how important is surface agitation? I currently have one MJ (top left) pointing towards the surface causing a nice ripple. The second MJ is midright pointing toward front/bottom. The Nano is mid/bottom facing back/bottom. My tank has a HOB overflow with a return is 1" pvc which is sectioned with 3 1/2" "T"s facing opposite directions (top: left, middle: right, bottom: left). This seems to get a good current around tank but would like to use the MJ on top hitting the surface more in the middle to create stronger waves. Also, was thinking of getting the mods for the MJ's if needed for more turnover. Oh, btw, the tank is a 40 gal high. Dims are 30"L x 12"D x 24"H.

It is good to have at least some surface agitation to potentially help with added gas exchange. It is somewhat reasonable to have as much movement as possible at the surface without actually splashing water. Just be sure that flow within the rest of the tank is optimal while doing this, as well.

one thing that helps is when the water goes down to your sump from the HOD overflow does it splash alittle in the sump? that helps also to get some oxygen in the water and helps let the gases out too

And as an additional side note. The MJ Mods don't work well with wavemakers. They are intended to be run full time not intermittenly.
