how long before should i wait to change the subtrate.. or do people change the surbstrate ever ..

my thinking is this.. how do you change the substrate in a moderately planted tank.. wont you be ripping up all the roots and stuff..

I have had the same flourite in my heavily planted tank for 3 years now and the plants are still doing great. About every 6 months I stick some Flourish tabs in the substrate, but that is about it.

There's no way to getting around replanting your plants when you change the substrate. To remove the plants without damaging the roots, slide your fingers under them in the gravel and gently lift up. Personally, when I rearrange plants or take them out to replant elsewhere, I always give the roots a good trim back.

Its not necessary to change your substrate unless you just want to.
