I read a while back that adding aquarium to a betta tank is a good thing to do and was wondering if it really is necessary?

As long as your fish is healthy and the water stays clean there's no reason to add aquarium salt. It is usually only necessary with sick fish such as fish with ich. Unless you're using distilled or reverse osmosis filtered water there shouldn't be any need to add anything other than a dechlorinator. The best thing for your betta would be good clean water of a consistent pH and temperature. As a general rule, the less you add to the water, the better.

Freshwater fish do not need any salt, and as was mentioned already, some are intolerant of any salt. IMHO, don't add it unless it's necessary. Also, inverts are usually very sensitive to salt, so if you also have snails or something in there, salt would be a bad thing.

Aquarium salt can be great when the fish are sick, but freshwater fish really don't need it otherwise. I like to use it to disinfect/clean old tanks.

Salt with heat make a good parasite remover (like Ich). Some will advocate salt in water as preventative measure but if you are disciplined in tank maintenance it is wasted money. "Aquarium Salt" is over-priced salt as you can get a large box of Kosher salt for the same price or less. What you don't need for your fish works well as margarita salt :grinyes::grinyes::grinyes:.

Scaleless fish and tetras are not tolerant of salt and should be used with care.

Thanks for all the advise I was just curious the bettas are doing fine without the salt I just read about it on one of the betta websites something about the salt preventing fungus infections. So far so good the bettas are healthy and happy not gonna ruin a good thing. Thanks again :D.
