How to get tobacco smoke residue/smell out?

I picked up a glass tank from craigslist today. It stinks of smoke, and no matter how many times I rinse it out (water only), it still smells.

What should I use to clean it: bleach, rubbing alcohol, etc?

White vinegar should take it out. I know if clothing smells of smoke, you can wash it in cold water with white vinegar and the smell will be gone.

Vinegar does help some. i had the same problem but i could not get the smell out of the light fixture.

If you can stand the smell, ammonia will cut right through it. Most of us have some around for fishless cycling and of course it is sold as a glass cleaner. The biggest problem using it is breathing while you use it. Only try it outdoors because it is way too much when used indoors, even when diluted as suggested on the bottle.
