How do you get the molding off the top of the tank? I want ot build a hood for my tank and i want to take off the stuff that is around the top of the glass. Here is a picture of what i am talking about (ignore the overflow) By the way this is the first image i ever attached.

The black plastic rim?
You can't take that off- it is structural support.

Ya removing the plastic molding on the top/bottom of the tank, especially if the tank is longer than 2 feet, will cause the glass to bow and most likely will eventually split the silicon seems.
You don't want to remove it.
If your building a wooden canopy I would recommend that you make the frame sit on the plastic molding and outfit the canopy with Trim that sounds down past the molding to hid it, if that is what your after, not seeing the molding.

Thanks, im defiantly not taking that off. Ill probably just put the canopy over the trim part like Guy mentioned.

Probably the safest route, and the way most comercially available canopy's are built.
