Trying to resurrect an old HOB filter by Regent today by replacing the impeller. It is now really loud with a rattling noise coming from the impeller well. Any suggestions?

did you replace it with the correct impellar? did you get a flashlight and look down in the impellar well where it sits and make sure nothing is down in there?

Sounds like something is not seated fully or perhaps not the right impeller.

I'm almost certain there is nothing else in the area blocking its seating and the old impellar made a similar noise. This has got me baffled. I can't leave it running because I can't even hear the TV over it..... anymore thoughts anyone?

Is the filter pushing water (i.e. seem to be filtering properly) while it's making the noise?

Its pushing water, but the flow is inconsistent. As the rattling gets louder the water will suddenly flow at a higher rate.

Not sure about that. But it still sounds like something is just not fitting properly, etc. or that not enough water is getting into the impeller chamber. Good luck!

Check the rubber bushings on the ends of the impeller. I recently had a mag pump making all sorts of noises, and somehow either the bushings shrank, or the seatings in the volute housing and magnet well got bigger, because there was about 1/16" of play in both ends. Wrapping the rubber bushings in Teflon tape so they seated properly fixed the problem. Another possibility is that the filter isn't purging all the air out of the intake tube, that can get pretty noisy as well.

I had an AC 110 do the same thing right out of the box, I tried everything and it drove me nuts. I switched back to two whisper 30-60's for a while until one died so i pulled out the 110 and it was still noisy. I turned the magnet/motor 1/16th of a turn in the filter body and viola it stopped. I let it run for about a week like that and when I turned it back it didnt make any noise at all. Worked for me, hope this may help.

Thanks Alley and Sploke for the advice....now that I'm home from the workplace I've got all evening to experiment with your suggestions. I hope one will work! Thanks again, I'll keep you posted.
