Hello,
I have two apple snails in my goldfish tank. One black, the other gold (replacement for the one which "jumped overboard :() Anyway, are there other snails which are appropriate for cold water tanks? I don't want an explosion of snails, though.

Japanese trapdoors are appropriate. They are livebearers with a long gestation, giving birth to single young and also good algae eaters. They would be a good choice for your tank.

Thank you. Also, I believe you responded when my gold snail "fell" out of the tank. I have the standard black plastic hood; my filter is on the rim. What would you suggest to cover the exposed areas of the tank so that I do not have future snails falling out.

Hi again...I checked out some photos of the trapdoor. It looks very similar to the mystery/apple snail. Or not? Or is my black snail a trapdoor?

I highly recommend the nerites. They are EXCELLENT algae eaters. They do NOT eat live plants, and while they may lay eggs in your tank, the eggs will not hatch without a brackish environment. They are the most excellent snail for cold or tropical water. I have them in my outdoor pond and in my tropical community tank. :)

Excellent algae eaters is almost and understatment....I just added 4 to my forty gallon in which I am fighting an algae war and man these things are like lawn mowers

No, I do not have a glass or plastic cover. Just the standard black plastic cover one purchases with an aquarium...that houses the light and which has the punch out sections for filter/heater. My filter hangs over the side so I need some type of cover which allows it to hang over the side.
I must address this soon. The little gold snail was quickly "attacked" by the black snail...all night and most of the day today! Whew.
Thanks for the tip about the other snails...too!

Click the 'Go Advanced' button below the quick reply field. Above the field where you type there are options for fonts, font sizes and whatnot. There will be a little paper clip to the right of the happy face. Click on the paper clip and a window will open that will allow you to upload pictures from your computer.

Hope that was as clear on paper as it was in my head.
