Hi there, im really worried about my Shubunkin. He has Popeye so we got treatment for this - Melafix, Antibacterial remedy - the instructions said to use it for 3 days, which we did, but it did nothing. Now he is really ill, very lethargic, he isnt eating, is in a really quiet part of the tank. His fins are just floppy down his sides, they arnt even clamped to the sides of his body, as if he cant even do that. He is off colour too, he isnt looking his usual golden self, but quite pale. He is opening and closing his mouth very slowly and his rocking side to side. I have also noticed tiny white spots on him, head and body. We have done a water change, we were worried the remedy we got him for his Popeye could have been the reason so wanted to get this out of the water, his pumps and filters are all clean, but the water change does not seem to have made a difference. We have other fish in the tank with him, but they are all ther're usual chirpy selves, like he is normally, please help!!

IF the white spots look like little grains of salt then he has ich and your other fish in his tank will soon have it also you need to treat if for ich soon as you can the medicine for that is available most everywhere and its not expensive. Some people use a salt treatment or just raise the tank temp high but I havent had a ich issue for years but it sounds like you have one. You can also look up fish diseases on the internet and see pics of what each disease looks like then you will have a better idea of what your dealing with. GOOD LUCK

Hi there,
Thankyou for relpying and your advice. All taken on board. It does look like grains of salt. We are also going to take a water sample into Aquamarque, hopefully they will be able to take a look at the water quality, and determine the best treatment for him. x

Can you get any medigold? Its a medicated food w/ 3 antibiotics. You can order it online (eg goldfishconnection.com). You can add salt for the ich as mentioned. (Here's an article: http://thegab.org/Articles/IchSaltTreatment.html)
Both these treatments won't affect your filter bacteria.
