I have noticed that most people with these filters only use them occasionally. Is there a reason for not using them constantly? Are there other benefits to the filter other than water polishing?

They're not designed to run constantly- they filter the water column to such a fine degree that they will clog if left running too long.

They will remove any and all particulate matter, and that can help in lots of applications besides just making the water look good. Algae problems can be helped by a diatom filter especially if you do a good glass cleaning before you run it- removing the floaty bits keeps them from landing anywhere and proliferating further. It is also invaluable in catching certain life stages of various parasites.
