Well, Im here to say that i know we've all been dazzled by numerous retailers telling us what we need to do for this and that and the other thing. Well, all i can say is, when your in a retailers shop, look around his display tanks, look for dead fish, foul odors, out of control algae, poor specimans. Then , look at what kind of equipment he uses. you can learn alot from this. Ask him what he puts in his reef tanks, and what he puts in his fish only tanks as far as supplements. Then, listen to what he has to say. I won't even shop at certain places that look poorly kept, nor take advice from the owners who just want to sell you their most expensive reef maintenance chemicals. Also talk to some of the other customers who may have reef tanks and ask about their successes and failures. Good luck, happy fish keeping.

I hear ya. My LFS is really nice, clean tanks, etc. The only problem is they push "there" way of doing things, like it's the only way it's going to work. I don't like that. I heard one of the employees there tell a customer that the only way to get rid of aptasia was to remove all corals and dose copper! I wanted to knock him out. It's sad, really sad. I pulled the customer aside and told him how to get rid of them. He was greatful. But they do have nice livestock. I like to go in and ask questions I know the answer to and hear what they have to say, sometimes I almost get into an argument with them when I tell them my experience.
