View Full Version : Survey: Gender Ratio of Invertebrate Enthusiasts

Lupin

Caitylee's thread in applesnail.net gave me this idea. I thought to myself, "Why not try to check this one out?" I also can't help but notice most of those who keep inverts are females especially when it comes to shrimps and snails whereas it's mostly males who keep crayfish (or cooked crayfish for me :evil_lol:).:D

NOTE:
If you never kept invertebrates out of interest, please do not vote. Thanks!

The poll is currently showing more males keeping inverts but no one is confirming your observation (females keeping shrimp/snails, males keeping crays). So...

I'm male, keep shrimp, snails and crays. Crays only recently, shrimp/snails for years.

I'm a new enthusiast (hope that is still okay for voting purposes)....I have 3 snails in my community (along with a bunch of invasive snails from my plant orders, etc....which I am keeping until they get overwhelming....some of them are quite cute, actually), and i am currently working on building a shrimp tank :)

I'm male, and I keep all three as well, though I like snails and shrimp far more than crayfish.

Do you know the sex ratio of users on this board?

I'm male and I keep shrimp, triops, and snails.

Lupin, maybe it seems more girls than guys keep inverts like snails & shrimp b/c the threads where owners are gushing over these critters with all the pics and comments are usually from girls. BTW, I'm a girl and I keep snails/shrimp. Tried keeping dwarf crays but just got bored...

Female, snail luvr. Kept shrimp before. I used to catch and play with crays at the stream when I was a lil girl. I have a red clawed crab now(not sure if she counts) but I would possibly call myself an enthusiast.

I'm a guy and a recent invert convert. I'm crazy about my shrimp and as soon as my snails come I'll be crazy about them, too.

female, shrimp for pets <1year, snails mostly for loach food & sand aeration but I like them. In the long past we had a mystery snail or 2 & a wild cray temporarily, both my husbands choice I think

I have very tempted by the lovely nerites & apple snails come in cool colors now.

what about the unknown option..........

ok whats going to happen is more males will keep since there tend to be more males in the hobby for some reason though the numbers will be closer then if you made one in gcc or gen fw.

Unknown or unsure??? You define yourself so you tell us!

Dexmaster, have you tried dwarf crays? Even some of the larger shrimp do well with other inhabitants. Unfortunately that is still one of those YMMV deals.

Male here.

I got into inverts when someone suggested to keep my Chinese algae eater with inverts if I didn't want to get rid of it.

Since red crayfish was available in an LFS, got two of them to keep the CAE in check.

Now, I've added three ghost shrimps into their tank.

As for snails, got some with aquatic plants. Use them as feed for my catfish, but in tanks where no fish eats snails, they're being pervasive. Had to do daily PWCs and turn lights off just to get rid of them. I'd prefer snails that are not prolific.

Female. Shrimp and snails.
I started kind a dumb with bettas and apple snails. The snails died from being in just a 1.5g tank with the betta. Thankfully, I did research and didn't give up. I started a puffer tank, and so I got pond snails as feeders. I liked 'em, and then I got cherry shrimp for the same reason. Now I've added ramshorns and mts, and I'll probably have some larger shrimp eventually. So, I have a 20g long invert tank, and 2 other tanks with inverts. I've thought about crays, but they just wouldn't work in any of my setups, and hubby would kill me if I added another tank. Besides, I'm not sure the house would support that much weight, lol.
