Aside from the difficulty in determining gender (since both with display breeding behvior, even without the presence of opposites), this really belongs over in Cichlids.

I have never heard of oscars being particularly hard to deal with.

You probably dont actually have a pair. It is very hard to sex oscars.

You need to look for the spawning tubes on the fish. a females is shorter and stubbier the males a bit longer and thinner.

If you are set on breeding oscars then you need to find out what you have then find an opposite. but that doesnt guarantee success they might not like each other.

The most efficient way is to by a batch of 6 or so and grow them out. when a pair forms (as in starts beating the crap out of all the others) sell the excess and wait.

going from where you are now you need to find out what genders you have. so watch for the breeding tubes, there is no other concrete way of telling.
