Simple question: I am looking to reseal my 40 breeder over the thanksgiving break (in between the turkey, football, shopping and whatnot) and i was wondering how long it takes for silicone to cure and be fish safe?
If using 100% pure silicone with no additives it takes about 2-3 days to set and a week to be fish safe. If using quick setting, it will set in a couple of hours and will cure in approx 72. It is fish safe when no "vinegar" smell is detected. That smell is caused by the chemical reaction of arsenic and silicone. GE I Window and Door contains no fungicides and therefore is often used. I have not had any problems using it nor have I heard of any. That doesn't mean it is fish safe even though it is extensively used in the hobby.
