Hello everyone, I am new here and also fairly new to the aquarium scene. I currently have four tanks consisting of a goldfish tank, shrimp tank, plant tank, and a tropical community tank.
My tanks are all fairly new and have been going for about two months. Now I know I made a mistake by putting plants in with a tank this new, but I wanted to see what everyone had to say about this...The fish are all fine and seem to be healthy, but the plants are barely growing(new growth is yellow in color) and there is a brown appearance on them that seems to be slowly killing the tissue as it progresses. This appeared to start when I brought home some kind of a hornwart-looking plant(can't remember the name) that had almost no healthy needles- they were all this brown, mushy, detritus kind of tissue that I thought was just dead tissue and considered nothing of it...Is it possible this plant gave all of my other plants a disease that is just killing everything, or is there a nutrient deficiency? I have since added Seachem plant tablets that contain all of the primary and secondary macronutrients along with almost all of the micronutrients. I also have some laterite that needs to be added to the plant tank- are the plants unable to uptake nutrients without the CEC(cation exchange capacity) provided by the laterite?
I am totally confused at this point
- the plants are doing horribly and dying fast, and nothing I do seems to make a difference. All I can figure is the tank needs the laterite or they are diseased...in which case should I just get rid of them all and disinfect the tanks? I would really like to avoid this for obvious reasons, but hopefully someone has some insight!
Thanks and I am glad to be apart of the community!:thm:
EDIT: I also forgot to mention that there is quite a bit of brown algae growing on the glass and rocks already- I am thinking these are diatoms which are no good and can kill the tank off from what I understand. Could this be the culprit of the increasing dead tissue on the plants? And how do I get rid of it without using chemicals or removing silica from the water?
