View Full Version : SAE Fry Identification
I was going to my LFS to get 4 SAE for my girlfriend because they said they had 10 in stock. However, when I got there, they did not look anything like my SAE. My SAE are adults and I was wondering if SAE fry look different from their adult version. These fish were silver'ish in color, had no discernable black stripe (could this be because they are babies?), supported themselves on the gravel with their fins and did not have a sucker mouth. I did not see any whiskers either.
Even if they were like my SAE I would have not bought them because there were 3 other dead fish in the tank :( .
Any thoughts or experience in this area?
Sorry, no pics since they were at the LFS.
Thanks :)

You did the right thing by not taking fish from the
tank with the 3 dead fish in it.
BTW when you say the SAE were babies,
what age, size were you talking about?
Cheers.
I would say they were no more than .75" to 1.0" in length.

and did not have a sucker mouth
SAE don't have sucker mouths, CAE are the ones with sucker mouths. The link provided is a good one to learn the difference between the 2. There are even flying foxes and false siamese algae eaters to make things even more confusing.
I know how to distinguish the adults from others because I did much research for my SAE to make sure I got the correct ones (since all my LFS are idiots). I am wanting to know if new SAE fry look anything different adult SAE. If not then I can feel comfortable with my decision (other than the fact that there were dead fish in the tank).
Thanks for all the help so far!!!

Even though they were babies, their black stripe
should have been visible.

I've bought them at about an inch and they looked just like the adults. If you ask me, you were seeing juvenile [Gyrinocheilus].
You did right!
Thanks!!!
I was pretty sure they were not SAE but had to make sure.
Thanks for all the help
