It's on the list of stuff to do, but not at the top (I think new windows holds that spot). Anyways.... how much of an issue is it if the filtration/pump on a large pond only runs during daylight? I was hoping to make them solar-powered. For reference, summer in Canada (at least my part of it) can have enough light from 6am-10pm to run solar.

I looked into solar pumps last year when planning a new pond/stream. We decided that the solar pumps were too weak and expensive.About $600 for my needs. I figured that in the next few years there will be advances in solar technology that will make the panels cheaper and much more efficient. They are working on a type that absorbs 30% more energy so it will be better in northern climates, but is not on the market yet, at least not available to the general public.

I figured that it would be better to use conventional electric pump and wait on the new tech instead of buying the older less productive and expensive types.
Hopefully I can buy the new panels someday and plug my pump into it.

I was planning on also buying a storage battery. I would think that having the pump going off and on several hours at a time would not allow the aerobic bacteria to live in the filter so it would be just a mechanic filter. You would have to keep your fish population low and it would need to be species that can handle low oxygen in muddy waters since every time the pump kicks in it would stir up all that was collected in the filter the previous day. Perhaps a frog pond would handle the on/off cycle?

I also bought a very small solar pump for $30 to put in a half barrel water garden. I wasn't planning on fish, just plants and it would be a fancy birdbath.
I was very disappointed in it. It was very weak (unlike the photo) when new and water leaked inside it so it sunk within a couple months so it didn't even last the whole season.
It is cheaper now, but not worth $5 imo.
