Everyone who came to dinner last night remarked at how beautiful my tank was. :)
this is what they kept looking at:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v251/zzyzx85/aquarium/DSC_2008-1.jpg
My uncle asked if I could set up a tank for him at his home. Perhaps a 40 or 50 gallon planted tank (about 36" long).
My other uncle wished he hadn't bought the blood parrots he has had for years that killed every other fish in the tank (he didn't do his research).
Unfortunately, little cousins were also around so the tank got tapped/slapped a few times. And the Mag-Float was used a few times to "clean" the glass of climbing snails.
Anyone else get any props last night?

That is a very nice tank.
Everyone at my Thanksgiving dinner are around here every week anyways, so my aquarium related fun was just in teasing my bro-in-law about giving him snails for his 55 (he hates snails).

I was there in front of my tank when my little cousin grabbed the mag-float and swept a few snails off the glass. I grabbed the mag-float from him, *gently* slapped him across the back of his ginormous head and asked:
"Why did you do that?"
"Cleaning it."
"The snails were cleaning the glass."
"oh" (looks at me like he knows he did something wrong and runs away to play with my Legos)
:headshake2:
he's the son of the uncle who has the BPs and in that tank, he "plays" with the fish using a magnetic algae scraper. Thankfully, my fish know to steer clear of the Mag-Float, except the otos.

hahaha
This was the little cousin that I went to Hearst Castle with over the summer. He could not keep his hands to himself...touch this, touch that. I was taking his hands off furniture and pulling him away when he was going for it. I noticed the tour guide kept a constant eye on him for the whole hour we were there touring the house.
Bad idea bringing a nosy 7 year old on that tour.
Plus, I was ready to gag him about a dozen times on the whole trip.
anyways,
FAQs of the night:
"How much did the whole setup cost you?"
"Is it self-sustaining?"
"Where'd you get all these things?"

Same here. I hate the cost question. Because 1)Its not really any of their business and 2) I try not to think about it because I like money more than my fish lol.
I also got the whole "How often do you clean it?" And when I said every 3 days I just get the old "Your crazy!"
But needless to say all 32 people we had over spent ATLEAST 5 mins sitting and starring at my tanks.
Lots of compliements that make you feel good about all the hardwork but then lots of "Holy crap what a waste of money." and that just gets annoying. I spend my hard earned money on what I love. Thats fish keeping and dirtbiking. They can spend their money however they like to.

yeah, the money part ended in a few sighs. But I reminded them that now that I'm finished (well...not quite since my pressurized CO2 is still coming together), I can actually make money on trim sales.

Ya but when I tell them my figure(which Im pretty sure me being SW is higher than yours lol) I get like the "Holy crap!!! Thats like 2 house payments!" And house here are really spendy lol.
I have tried telling people that I can sell my frags for money but nobody gets it. I dont care anymore. Its my hobby. I love it. And its very relaxing to enjoy in the evenings after work.

The question I get the most is "how much do they have to grow before we can eat them?"

Thanks! Actually, he's got a notch in his dorsal fin and it hasn't grown back in almost a month. Started as a small hole and got bigger.
Funny thing is that if you didn't know how a gourami looked like, you wouldn't know it was missing. Some of my older little cousins thought it looked normal as most fish have that small bump of a fin before it's caudal fin.

Man, every time the nieces and nephew have left from a visit, I'm always having to wipe off the hand prints...and i think there was a foot print this time :eek3:
But if I could have my druthers I would only have one of the nieces and the nephew over (the older niece is a royal pain in the behind, and one of these days, uncle is going to introduce her the stories of the bogeyman )
The younger niece loves to drop sinking pellets into my 40 gallon and watch the rams swim after them as the fall. The nephew likes to watch my marble angel cruise around in the 55 and visit the tarantula and fire belly toad tanks. He's quiet enough for me to let him hang out in the room where these tanks are. I just give the older niece lessons in field goal attempts :headbang2:

Ha, I like this thread. Nice tank btw. This is the whole reason I dont like kids dropping by, I'm like well at least my girls love the fish and are usually very good about telling their friends hands off, stand back a little more!!! The oscars, however, seem to enjoy being oogled.

That's one thing I had not anticipated when I set out to go planted - that my tanks would help pay for their own upkeep. I told one fish keeping relative that I'd moved $40 worth of plants in <24 hours a week or so before Thanksgiving. I think I may be fielding questions like "Why are my fish eating all of my new plants?" soon (he has African Cichlids).
Now my dirtbikes (years ago) never, ever helped pay their own way (I was never a competitive rider). I agree that they can be a waste of money (lots of money in, an occasional half day of riding out, lots more money in...).
