My sister teaches 4th grade and just received a free 10 gallon tank from Tetra to use in the classroom. I am raising guppies that I may give her for her tank but was wondering if anyone had any ideas for what would be good for her to use for the class.

She will probably not be the one taking care of them. It will probably be me and I won't have an opprotunity to go over there often, so it will need to be hardy fish that won't need too much upkeep. I check my water and everything almost daily but like I said won't be able to do that for her.

Thanks...

For a 4th grade tank, I think that guppies would be good for the tank. Bright colors and long fins would probably fascinate everyone in the class. As long as they are fed and any babies taken out, then they would do fine.

African aquatic frogs would make an interesting addition.

um... i think a nice pair of convict(yes, i usually keep my con pairs in 10's and due perfectly fine) because it would be so fasinating to kids to see fish raise up babies and all. it would be cool =]

I like Guppyman's idea, when I was that age (a few years ago lol), I would have been AMAZED at a tank with fish raising babies in it. You could also get shelldwellers, (1m:3-4f); they're hardy and also have a lot of fry. The kids would be into seeing the fish in the shells, too.

White Clouds would be good. The school nicely, very hardy, cooler water, can take unstable water conditions.

platies for sure. tough as nails in terms of hardiness but still the perfect community fish. plus, they come in pretty much any color you can think up.

If you want to do cichlid pairs I'd think twice about the convicts unless she has an agreement first with her LFS to offload the babies when they are big enough. The shell dwellers would be a lot easier to unload. I agree though about the kids and how they would love to see a breeding pair of pretty much anything in there.

The only reason you may not want the guppies/platies/other livebearers would be because the kids might freak out b/c the parents eat the fry lol

When I was that age my class raised guppies and I thought it was the greatest thing I had ever experienced. The teacher gave out guppies to those who wanted them at the end of the year and I had my very own guppy colony for a couple years lol.
