My 10g on $300 budget

Hello everyone! I haven't posted in a while :headshake2: been a little occupied lol
anyways, I am in a contest on another forum..the rules are you can use $300 to make a reef from scratch, 5.5g only has $250 in the budget.The tank, live rock, sand and any equipment under $15 does not apply to your spending and if you lets say use a filter that you had laying around they discount 75% of the original price..if ya want a link PM me..prizes are for best 5.5g, best 10g and most innovative contest 5.5 only has $250 in the budget...the contest runs for 6 months :lipssealedsmilie: We haveto post a FTS the 17th of every month till March

I thought this would be fun and an interesting view on what others do with the money they have for the budget and wanted to show you guys mine..I always keep my tanks simple :D

I pulled a few small peices of L/R out cause the side closest to the koralia was to tall and I was not getting good flow since the flow is all pointing to the front :)

Thanks everyone! I have my fingers crossed since I am at the limit with my budget...altho I a thinking of taking out the bubble coral since it has grown a bit and inflates really big hitting the glas and top of rock...looks smooshed, poor thing so that will put $28 back in that I can add some more stuff :D I want to make this a zoa dominated tank with some nice mushrooms at some point, but the trumpets are doing excellent under the lighting.

If anyone has questions or needs advice shoot me a PM..I am willing to help :)

Hello everyone! so I had to take out the bubble...it was to big for the corner I had it in :( but i is now in my 40L
Then came the what can I add for $28 and the $1.42 I had left? well I sold my blue carpet outta my 40L along with the porcelain crab hosting it...why kick him outta his home right? so I wanted a porcelain crab again...I think that they are fascinating to watch, I went to my LFS and had 5 to choose from :) here is what I added today after taking out the bubble..this budget thing is tough lol

Ya I think I am 1 of 3 people in Montana that keep a SW Reef. Or atleast it seems that way. There are like 3 saltwater shops in the entire state and 2 are terrible. One is outstanding but they are 4hrs away. I hate ordering zoos online because you cant see what your ordering.

The LFS I go to collects at one of the inlets in Boynton Beach they wait for high tide and collect at a depth of 30 feet...they collect 4 outta the 6 times a week they go out. Sometimes conditions don't let them. I love Natural sea water and am having a hard time on wether or not I want to go synthetic, I just got a great deal on a RO/DO. It will cost me a little less to do the synhetic, but I have well water so I will be wasting salt from the water softner :( I have excellent growth with NSW and do not add anything to the water except 2 part if I get lazy between water changes lol

Stick with NSW then. It sounds like it is working great in your tank. I wouldnt change anything now. If I could have NSW in my tanks I would. I could buy the stuff in the box but its like $5 a gallon. Thats insane.

Although if you already bought the RO/DI you could set that up and have say 20gallons of RO/DI water on hand for topoffs. Thats what I would do.

Oh and it seems like I have found my dream LFS. Only its not really local. Its 5hrs away. Heading there tomorrow. Hopefully I can come back with some really nice zoos. He claims that if all the other Saltwater shops in Montana were to combine stock he would still have twice what they had. And I know one shop 4 hrs away that has TONS of stuff. So Im really hopeful.

This is working great for me and the xenia stays close to the light and flow, all you need is an extra suction cup and some super glue :) It also fills that top side

Thank you! water changes are the trick :) also filter floss gets changed every week with the ater change...I am very happy with the drs foster and smith HOB with surface skimmer for this tank :thm:

Yes those are zoanthids..there are also palyathoa which are larger
There are too many varieties to count and some are collectors choices of the moment..I believe that purple hornets are all the rage now lol a few months ago it was tubbs blues and before that Armor of gods...I personally would not pay $20-$50 a polyp, kinda gives gives new reefers the idea that is the way everything is but there are reefers who are willing to share and not charge outrageous prices for something so small and that multiply great in good conditions

also my orange plate has not been puffing up and looking a little bleached so I pulled it out and put it in my 40 I do not know what caused it cause I haven't changed a thing...maybe the brain was stinging it

Nice tank. What do you do to make everything multiply so quick. How many water changes do you do and what percentage? Do you add something to the water to get this growth?

Hello! No I do not dose anything I do a 2.5g water change once a week with natural sea water :) some multiply fast some don't
took care of the flat worms with flat worm exit

No I am on a budget..a chiller would blow that outta the water lol
I don't run a chiller, the temp stays at appx 79 during the day with the T5 lights on..I have a heater set at 76 in the HOB
my home has central AC which is set at 74 at night and 75 when not home
