white spots

when goldfish are in sporning mode and the males have white tubecles on their gills have any of you noticed simular tubicles on the caudal/tail fin, 1 of my fish have these but no sign of white spot any where else any suggestions.

Um, unless they are on the pectoral fin or near the gill cover, I would doubt that those are breeding tubercles...try Googling "anchor worms" to see if those are the tubercle-like protuberances...

Hello goldene, Chilli might be right about the worms but it also could be ich. When goldfish are in "spawning mode" they chase the female around the tank trying to get her to release her eggs. All the trashing around could fatigue the fish and cause him to become more susceptible to diseases. I think a little patience is needed here to figure out what it might be. If it is ich it is going to spread and if it does it can be corrected quickly.

Thanks all, as far as I can tell they are all male with no sign of chasing, the fish with the spots seems fine eating ok etc, but I do have a veiltail that sometimes sits on the botton and although feeds readily has bloches and blood streaks on his caudal fins similar to when when they get chilled. Iv checked for parasites and cannot see any? but I recently fed live food.

Carp pox

Carp pox is a very common problem in ornamental carp (such as Goldfish and Koi), it is caused by a viral infection similar to the human herpes virus. It does not seem to cause the fish much distress and the fish will continue to swim and eat readily, but it is definitely unsightly.

Carp pox shows itself as off white waxy lumps predominantly on a fish’s tail and fins, and is often brought on by stress or dropping water temperatures and often reoccurs during winter only to improve when temperatures rise again. A fishes immunity system will normally fight off this infection within a few weeks but can be helped by gently scraping the lumps off and applying tincture of iodine.

Hi goldene, I just read up this carp pox, is the fish new, have you been keeping it in water temperatures below 60 degrees foe extended periods of time? Did you try in increase the temperature in the tank?

Hi Avoxo. The fish is nearly 3 but I have recently introduced a new fish a 'hillstream loach' the guy at the aquatics said they had had them for a while and was ok to put straight in my tank which I did against my better judgement, the 4ft tank I have at present is unheated so I guess the temperture drops below 60 when the heating goes off in the night, I am getting a new larger tank delivered this monday with two heaters so I can keep the temperature level, I am hopeing everything will be fine then, what do you think?

Hi goldene, congratulations on the new tank. As a rule I always quarantine my fish for at least a month before I introduce them to my established tanks. Better hope the loach does not acquire a taste for the slime coat on your goldfish. Goodluck.

Hi again, The loach was recommended by tetra mag and they only grow to 3-4 inch so they are suppose to be fine with gold fish but I was wondering about the veiltail as he has never had a problem with his fins before and as fancys tend to sleep on the graval bottom with fins spread is the loach making the blotches by sucking on them, possibly ?

Hi goldene, thats a good question. I guess the only way to find out is to catch the loach if it is doing it.

Well I quarantined the veiltail and treated it 'it seems fine' the bloke at the aquatics says the loach should not suck on the fish or their fins and its abit hard to catch it if it is because it hides most of the time and blends in with the wood roots in the tank plus its only small at present, so maybe its bacterial or maybe the veiltail has been getting chased, as the other fish have started chasing one of the commets who I was sure was a male, but is the only one not showing tubecals yet?
