So I was at a local Petsmart today and stumbled upon a Rubber Pleco and a Sailfin Pleco, both at about 2" apiece. I looked at the price and they were only about $4.50 a fish. Is that cheap?

I plan on putting both in separate 55 gallon tanks, one a community tank and one a CA cichlid tank.

Cheap maybe, but not appropriate for a 55. The sailfin may reach 2 feet! :eek3:

YIKES! I could have sworn I read 12-15" online. Is the two foot size common or is it more or less a freak thing?

On second thought, I'm beginning to doubt whether or not it's actually a sail-fin. It doesn't look like any of the pictures on the web. I know this is a bad pic, but all I have is a cell phone for pictures. Does this look (to the best of your judgement) like a sail-fin?

Common plecoes in general will hit two feet if given the chance. It's not a freak thing.

18" is average, but if they live long enough, sailfins can get to a good 2'

For a 55 gal I would stick to plecos that max out about 6-8". There are quite a few available. Some of the smaller ones are the clown pleco, bristlenose and rubber lip these will reach a maximum of 3.5".

Clowns are super cool plecs, love wood. Only problem is alot of them like to hide. I lucked out on mine, its staying out alot of the time :D . Bristle Nosers have alot of personality to them and are cool as well.

My rubberlip died :( when I got him he was mal-nourished, didn't take anything. Transferred him to my 29g and he seemed to be doing better, but quickly went backwards.

Word to the wise, if the plecs stomach is caved in, don't get it.

How well do rubber lips associate with other catfish, such as a zamora wood cat?

Its been my experience that Plecos don't bother other fish unless food is involved.
