Ive got a little coralife 150watt mh,it has a clamp on it.would this make a good sump light or just too much?Im starting mangrove trees,do they need mh lighting?

The heat output would be of some concern if the sump is underneath and enclosed. You could use you sump for starting ***s however.

another question I have is..my sump is a 55gal tank.it has a fuge that is 22"long and the baffles are 14"high,I would like to fillthat say 8"" deep with sand, lots of rocks toplnt mangroves.is this a bad idea?is 8" too deep?may look pretty cool

It depends on how much room above the refugium you have for growth. The 8" sand + rock rubble is a great idea and mangroves will do fine planted in that.. but they get tall outside of the water so that is something to consider. You could probably cut 2" of sand out and still have a working DSB if you needed to.

so what your saying is have a 6"sand bed then lots of rocks?or should the sand bed be exposed?

No, sandbed doesn't have to be exposed, you can pile rocks on top. Just make sure it is 6" deep or more to have a working DSB. I was just saying you can have as little as a 6" sandbed if vertical room is going to be an issue for mangrove growth in your fuge. If it isn't an issue stick with your original plan of 8".

Well, the MH would encourage rapid photosynthesis. Keep the sump vented and I think you'll be fine. The only real drawback is the wattage.
