a few days ago i noticed my cardinalfish acting strange they were all bunched together in one corner of the tank. then i saw my damsels picking at them today i noticed there fins are damaged and one had died. are they sick or have they became damsel food?

Ouch.. that is a hard lesson to learn. Never put docile fish in with aggressive fish. Not many fish can stand up to a damsel and a cardinal or firefish are 2 of the most peaceful fish I know of.. no way they would make it in a tank with any damsel (even a clownfish would pester cardinals)

these fish have been in the same tank for about a year now. thats why i thought it might be fin rot.

Could be the damsel it growing up and maturing. They get much more aggressive with age. I had a cool rare damsel at one point and did great for about 6 months.. then a switch went off in its head and it turned into a psyco killer all of the sudden. To me, those wounds definately look like fin nipping/fighting and not fin rot.

I would agree that your cardinals don't look sick, just beat up by the damsel. If the problem is not addressed soon though, the stress could result in them becoming sick. Or, you risk the damsel killing them.

That is an understatement.. and you will realize that when you go attempt to catch it. I literally had to tear down my reef tank, remove every single rock in the tank to catch the little terror of a damsel mine turned out to be. I hate to admit it, but it is the only live fish I have ever flushed. It had killed or forced several of my other fish to jump and I was a little peeved. After an hour of work just to catch the stupid fish the last thing I wanted to do was spend $20 in gas and 2 hours of my time to drive to my closest LFS to return a $5 fish. I still feel guilty about doing it to this day but the stupid fish forced me.
