I purchased three of these guys for my 40 gallon tank. I really liked the pattern and they were on sale. Of course, I assumed since they were plecos I'd never seen them.

Wrong!

I see two of them frequently. I see the third one as often as I thought I might. They even know when I feed in the morning and come and stick on the glass. Should they be out so much with the lights on? Or are they out because they're hungry and looking for food? I feed them algae wafers and they have a small hunk of driftwood in the tank for them.

Also, is there any sexual diamorphism? One of the plecs is darker and has longer fins, but I didn't know if that meant anything.

They are really cool little guys. Lots of attitude :D

On sexual dimorphism, the males will have a "furry" looking tail. The armor plates on their tail will be sticking out more. Once you know what to look for, this will be easy to spot.

As to why they are not hiding, I have no idea. If they are really hungry, did you check their bellies to make sure they are not thin/ well fed?.

I wish I had your guys' luck on clown attitude! I got a really nice looking one but it stays hidden most of the time.

Thanks for the replies.

They're bellies are quite round. I guess I was just expecting them to hide a lot more. They don't like me looking closely at them though. If they see me staring they take off, LOL.

I'll have to see about the "fuzzy" tail next time they're out. Thanks.

I wish my BN pleco was like your clowns, I only see hm about once a week. As long as their bellies are round and seem healthy, I think it's kay for them to always be out.
