Say Hello to Sally Ann. Picked her up for my wife's birthday. A couple months ago she saw a Basset Hound on the web and made a comment about she would like to have one, which I filed away in my main memory banks. Saw an ad in the paper where a kennel had 1 left so I figured it would be good for some points so I got it

Oh super cute!! I love basset hounds, so adorable! Well, except for the drool, but some are worse than others with that lol. FYI, especially if you're in SC - bassets are very prone to ear infections so just be sure to keep her ears clean, especially in the summer. The heat and humidity and the fact that not much air gets under their big floppy ears causes this problem.

I'm a typical male, every now and then I'll get it right. Lucy, Thanks for the tip. My daughter has a Cocker Spaniel so I've heard about the ear thing.

My eyes are having a pink overdose meltdown!
Doesn't look like she's going to be a working dog. Ah well, it's a dog's life means something different today.
Love those little hounds, they make a real good addition to the family.

I love Bassetts. I had a female lemon and white like yours many years ago. I would love to have another but I just don't have enough time to give them all the love they need. Second cutest puppy in the world.

Such a cutie!!! She looks right at home!
CONGRATS!!!:D I grew up with a female Basset-we got her for my mom Mother's Day 1995!!.....My Dad got major Brownie points for that one!!LOL
If you have never owned a hound-or if you have then you know-you want to get her into a puppy training class ASAP!! Just remember....Hounds are a different breed of dog-MAJOR stubborn and they TOTALLY have their own minds!!! Oh and make training FUN....Positive reinforcement is the ONLY thing that Ive ever gotten to work on the hounds that I have trained/helped train!! Good Luck, keep us up dated with Pics!!:) And if you have any questions/need help let us/me know!!:)

Bassets are amazing. I had one a few years back named Henry. Have her feet checked often as Bassets have a disease that causes their feet bones to grow at like 40degree angles outward. Wont kill but it can hurt them.

Cute puppy indeed.
Please get her accustomed to having her nails clipped. The top breed I ever saw in over 20 years of professional pet grooming that HATED having nails clipped is the basset hound! Make it fun. If you don't know how to do it, don't risk cutting them too short and hurting her, have a professional teach you.

PuppyFluffer GREAT point!! Our Basset was HORRID when it came to us doing her nails!! Now groomers on the other hand was a different story!lol But doing nails at an early age is ALWAYS a good idea!!:)

Hounds are not stupid or stubborn but they do get distracted when a new odor gets to their brain, which happens frequently.
Dogs do not have human type intelligence but they seem to learn faster than we do but they never forget anything either. Dogs like to have the same thing happen all of the time. Dogs learn from you even when you think you are not teaching. You may be doing dishes but the dog, who appears to be resting, is observing what you are doing and learning what it needs to do to be the best possible companion, which is what they are built to do and in the case of Hounds after they sort out a new odor.
If you keep these few basics in mind you will become a good companion to your dog.
Good luck! That is a cute pup!

Not something I'll do. We live about 1/4 mile from a groomer. I'll let her handle that .
Today will be her first Vet day. We want to make sure everything is OK. Thanks for all the helpful comments.

I didn't mean to imply that you personally had to learn how to do it (though it's generally easy).
Having a groomer do it if certainly fine. You can help the process by getting the puppy used to having it's feet handled and making it a pleasant experience. That is "training" to be accustomed to nail trims.
Training starts at birth with a dog. They learn from their mother and their littermates how to "be" in the world. Humans take over that job when we take them into our homes as pets and companions. I did dog training for many years. I really like the general philosophy of Cesar Milan, "the Dog Whisperer" guy. His books are very good and I strongly recommend them.

Thanks I thought she was too young for training class.
Most places will allow you to enter a dog at 10/12 weeks old...and as was stated...with dogs-along with most every other animal-it is NEVER to young to train!!:)

She's 7 weeks old. We I said train I was speaking of some sort of formal school not the general stuff. I called a couple places around and 12 weeks was the earliest that they start.
I sort of figured that you meant general things---but my mom taught her French Bulldog to come and sit between the time that she got him at 8 weeks old and 10 weeks old!!:) It is GREAT to get as much taught to them as early as you can!!:)

Training is best begun at about two weeks. This supposes that the breeder understands and is willing. Puppies are an incredible amount of work.
Mother dogs only work fulltime for about two weeks then, even though they hang around feeding and training for a couple of months, any excuse to get away is taken joyfully. Sitting, grooming and just general behaving like a dog is best started very young.

Don't tell her(it may go to her head) but I wouldn't have it any other way. I am a much better person with her than without her. Sally Ann is a hoot to watch trying to run and falling from stepping on her ears. I'm 58, my daughter is 32, it's been a long time since I had to get up two or three times a night. But we're enjoying it.
AW!! Sally Ann is a cute name!!:) Our old girl was Clara Belle...I think that 2 names just go great for a hound!!:) I know what you mean about getting up during the night--our "youngest" dog was 11 when we got my mom's puppy....it was QUITE the change!lol Im so glad that you guys are having a good time with her!!

Very cute... I wish I had known you wanted a basset, I (and some animal groups) just lost a litter of bassets to a gassing shelter about 2 weeks ago.
Owner decided she didn't have the time to raise the litter after all.

Yes, that's why I will never go to a breeder... Most dog breeds are over bred.
There was a preggo female pure bred GSD gassed with the pups.. Same reason too; the owners decided after they bred her they didn't want to raise pups..
Any update on the little girl?
