Only three are kuhlis, sids, or hillstreams but they last need a specialized set up...
Could go either 8-10 kuhlis or sids. Just don't mix both though. The kuhlis will not like being harassed around by the sids especially as sids are playful little monkeys.

Of the commonly available loaches I'd go with sids.
There are some others that are small but less common. I recently got schistura savona that are very active & not as "crabby" as other schistura can be. More similar to sids on feistiness scale.
A few crimson loaches could work in the right set up, brookish rather than full river tank. Pretty fish.
A 15 seems a bit small for your corys, you could keep them with kuhlis in the bigger tank if they outgrow it.

the cories are not even an inch big yet... ill get them a bigger tank when they need it. as for loaches id love kuhli's but my mother would freak when i brought them in the house:headshake2: looks like ill have to c if my lfs got dwarf chains.

Sids are super nice, just thought I'd give some alternatives. Are kuhlis to "snaky" for your mom? Took a while for me to love them too. Less than botia types but cool in their own right,
Do you live close to Toronto? That would increase your loachy availability.

They aren't the easiest to find in LFS's but if thy have them for a good price than go for it!

I have a 55G heavily planted sids tank, there's 42 of the little monkeys in there with a breeding group of 6 albino cories and some otos. The sids are entertaining little loaches and there's not a nasty bone in their little body! I vote for sids too!!!

www.franksaquarium.com has sids for $60 (for a group of 6)...best online deal out there.

I didn't see any sids on Franks site. I also vote for sids. I have 7 in my 46, and they are my favorite fish. I'm always (even now) looking for more. None of the LFS near me ever stock them, so mine have come from online. ThatPetPlace had them for 9.99 last week, while they are 19.99 at Dr. Fosters and Smith. Good luck !

pinkertd, I check Franks all the time, have bought many fish from him.. Do you mean "hillstream loaches" ? When I scroll down, there are 0 sids in the list I get, and all others seem to be out of stock. Still looking for some saddled loaches myself. Thanx.

Just to let you know I talked with Frank and he won't be shipping until after the holidays. He also doesn't like to ship during the cold weather so you may have to wait longer...

Yep, I saw that notice about Frank not shipping during the holidays. When I couldn't find these, I went and ordered some more sids and some more sewellia lineolata elsewhere ! Should be here this week. Thanx for the info.

was on loaches.com and seen these loaches called black line loaches. looks like chain loaches(y.sidthemunki), stays at the same size. just a bit of a different pattern. just a blk line instead of a chain pattern. i might see about these instead of sids as sids are to expensive for my liking but might just get a smaller school and up it as time goes on. scientific name for this loach is Yasuhikotakia nigrolineata. any1 no anything about this loach?
jpappy789
12-17-2008, 6:12 PM
Yasuhikotakia nigrolineata is 4" compared to the 2" adult size of sids, not the same size.
I would say you would have to order these online or through a LFS. They aren't a common fish to see in the stores.
evelyn80
12-17-2008, 6:20 PM
sids(y.sidthemunki) only get to 2 inches?? i thought they got to 4... and thats what i was gonna see on friday if i could get sids or blk lines through my lfs for cheaper than online

Some discrepancy but 2" seems to be the norm size for adult sids. I'm thinking the black lines are going to be just as expensive, if not more based on their availability.

I've had sids for ~3+ years (twice) & 2 inches SL (standard length, without tail) is the max. Nigrolineata are cute in a skinny sid way, get sids if you can ;), they're cuter.

evelyn80
12-22-2008, 7:58 PM
could 4 yo-yos work in my set-up? i read the only get 4-5 inches long
fishorama
12-22-2008, 9:09 PM
I'd say no, yoyos get to 5+ or 6+ inches + that's just ones I've seen. They are a bit more rowdy too. Striatas grow slowly to 4+ inches & are among my favs. Kubotai are ~ the price of sids but also slow growers to 5 inches. Histrionicas seem (so far) to be faster growers IME.
Did you look to franksaquarium? High shipping but higher quality fish I hear. Jpappy is getting sids there I think.
Jpap is indeed getting sids. Striatas and kubs are my best recommendations for a 35g. I have several yoyos here. They are indeed too boisterous and one is 5 inches already.
Jeremy Smith
12-23-2008, 12:02 AM
I agree with what was said before. The yoyos would most likely be to much in that size, not only is there the pushy nature, they also tend to have a tendancy to decide to move quickly in bursts at times. I have had a 6in yoyo that would do this in a 75 and more than a couple of occasions would hit the side of the tank.
I say Sids or Striata.
Good luck, as most of us would say you will most likely be assimilated from wich ever species you decide.
jpappy789
12-23-2008, 1:04 AM
Yep but frank won't be shipping until after the holidays so I will be waiting until he gives the all clear! I highly recommend buying from him if you are going with sids... I only hear great things about him! I think 6 sids plus shipping was ~$95 US. I believe he is based in NY so shipping might be even less for you. Not sure how exactly the rates work.

12-23-2008, 10:50 AM
They dont have sids at my lfs and they cant order them :( no way im payin 100$ for 6 fish i dont want sids that bad! so i guess botia striata it is then! zebra loaches are cool i love the look of them and im gonna guess the cost of them is nothin compared to sids! also what do i feed these loaches?
fishorama
12-23-2008, 11:13 AM
My striatas aren't fussy eaters, they love frozen bloodworms, any sinking pellets, wafers or flakes are good too.
evelyn80
12-23-2008, 11:25 AM
they dont happen to like brine shrimp pellets do they?
evelyn80
12-23-2008, 11:26 AM
i forgot to ask how many would be good for this stock
10 neons
1 sword tail
2 blue rams
1 female beta
1 fancy male guppy
i was thinkin 5 mabye?
5 is fine.:) Loaches aren't fussy over foods. They gobble anything they consider food.
evelyn80
12-24-2008, 1:08 PM
if i got botia kubotai(marble loach) instead would the numbers still work? i looked at them and there pretty! hard choice i like zebras alot to! :D
fishorama
12-24-2008, 5:22 PM
yes, they are also slow growers but max out a bit larger than striatas. Either is fine.
evelyn80
12-24-2008, 8:28 PM
marbles it is! or mabye zebras whatevers cheaper :D
evelyn80
12-25-2008, 2:07 PM

evelyn80
12-30-2008, 1:44 PM
you gotta be kiddin me the only loaches i can find in the area are weather loaches.... and my lfs i usually get fish from doesnt have loaches on their order list:swear: do weather loaches need to be in a group and can they go in warmer water?
fishorama
12-30-2008, 2:11 PM
Your tank would not be a suitable home for your other current & planned fish & weather loaches. Dojos get large (8+ inches), need a group of at least 3 & are cool water fish.
evelyn80
12-30-2008, 2:14 PM
rats!! looks like i may need another tank to put loaches in! im so mad i wanted those marbles so bad!!!! and im not buyin online, my family and i are out alot and i dont want anything to happen to the fishes if they arrive and were not here
fishorama
12-30-2008, 2:43 PM
From your other thread in GF, I think more corys instead of loaches might be best. They're lots of fun too in a bigger group.
A 55g is a good size for a trio of weathers & a school of white clouds, someday I'll try this.
evelyn80
12-30-2008, 8:48 PM
me to, actually ill go to toronto and find yo-yos for it :D
I don't think dojos need to be really in a group. It's up to you but keeping singly can work just fine compared to most other loaches that do shy away if kept in lesser numbers.
evelyn80
12-31-2008, 5:56 PM
do weather loaches need cool water water(70-74 degrees) or tropical(76-80 degrees)?
jpappy789
12-31-2008, 5:57 PM
cool water is best, though they can TOLERATE tropical temps...
evelyn80
12-31-2008, 5:59 PM
let me refrase, can they thrive in tropical conditions? dont want them to suffer unnecasarrily
jpappy789
12-31-2008, 6:00 PM
I would say no.
evelyn80
12-31-2008, 6:12 PM
can they stand 75 alright? my tanks a but cool cause my heaters not strong enough...(working on getting a bigger 1)
evelyn80
01-01-2009, 12:39 PM
