hey all....

so I've had my 30g running for about 6weeks now... its fully cycled...
had LR in it...
Nitrates 0
nitrites .1
PH 8.5
KH 9
ammonia 0

Picked up my CUC
6 blue leg crabs
3 turbo snails
5 nasarious snails
1 large hermit
1 urchin
1 anemone
4 mushrooms on LR
large green star polyp

1 spotted goby
1 blenny (unsure of type, but it LOVES to hide)
1 clown

at any rate, this tank is going to be a reef tank...
right now I've got a fluval 305 with a corelia PH to assist in flow in the tank. protein skimmer from a oceanic biocube 29

I'm right now working on a custom made sump to house everything. so thats in the works for later....

at any rate, I picked up the anemone today... and I was wondering... where the heck do you put those things in your tank???

do they like LOTS of flow? I put it in a couple of places just to see it get blown over by the water movement within seconds....
right now I have it "placed" in a hole in one of my peices of LR....

it seems to be "happy" there... but I did a filter change in my fluval.... (changed a foam to a carbon - I ran out the other day) but I noticed within seconds that the anemone had all but fallen out of the hole I'd placed him in.

I restored the flow to the tank... and the anemone is back up standing...

I know its going to take time to fully open in the tank.... but how do I know where to place it? or will it place itself?

next, is there specific feeding for anemones? target feeding???

lastly, how can I encourage my clown to host with it? my clown has social issues.... (it has refused to host with ANYTHING)

thanks guys.... and gals.

im not an expert yet at the saltwater side, but from what i have read(i read alot on these forums) your tank has only been up for only 6 weeks it is too soon to put the anemone in it.all i have read you need to have it up for atleast 6months,at the minimum. But as far where to put it,this is also from what i have read.in the front center of the tank and let him find his own way and the clown will have to take to hosting it,you cant make it.im sure most people here will tell you to take the anemone back to the lfs as only 6weeks up and running is not long enough yet for it to survive.what kind of lights do you have also?you have any pics?

oh and i missed the urchin,im sure your tank is too small for that also.and not been up and running long enough.you should take it back as well.but that is just imo.is up to you if you keep them both.i have read a few threads on urchins and im sure other people will tell you the same thing i am.also im sure if it dies in your tank is not good for your fish.(have seen fish eat the inside first hand)done alot of snorkeling in the philippines, but being in the ocean and in a tank is different.anyway goodluck with your tank.and would like to see some pics

I would take the anemone back to the store....These should only be put in a mature reef system. Also, what lighting do you have on the tank??

The urchin...depends on the species...most will mow through coralline algae and then you have to target feed...stands a good chance of dying from starvation in a tank as young / small as yours...so, i would take that bak to the store aswell...

Just my thoughts...

I agree with all the above. Tank is way to young and way to small for a nem. And if youi don't have halides or lots of T5's, take it back.
It also doesn't matter where you put it, it will move itself to where it's comfortable, if you don't already know that then you obviously haven't done any research on anemones.
Have you 'nem proofed' your powerheads? Due to their wandering nature, and your tank being to small, the chances are it will end up getting sucked through the powerhead and wiping out your entire tank.

What kind of anemone is it? I would take it back considering your tank is so young and very unstable at this point. I waited over 8months before I got one. I wanted to wait longer but I couldnt pass this one up as it was the most amazing carpet anemone I had ever seen.

I've had the tank up and running with rock since beginning Nov. its well cycled and all the parameters are great! (I'm doing daily checks to verify)

most of the LR I got from my 14G... so it was already cured and teaming with life...

the anemone has been doing fine so far... still has great color...
although he's moving everywhere in the tank...
guess he's still looking for a place to call home.

I've target fed him, and he's eating fine.

the shrimp hangs out with him.... but I think he's just there for a free meal....

and my clown wants nothing to do with it.

I'm curious... if I added a smaller clown... one that would host... whether it would persuade the larger to host in the nem as well....

Looks like a condy anemone, very common, very hardy, but are known to pack a mean sting towards other corals if it touches them. I had one myself for a long time and it did fine under even the worst lighting (PCs), although I had upgraded the lighting steadily over the years and I could tell each upgrade the anemone liked it more and more. They will walk around at first to find their home.. just let it do its thing and don't force it anywhere.. once if finds a nice home they usually stay put for a long time.

To be honest, that tank looks very similar to my tank when I first got into a reef tank, and like you (I didn't know any better), put a condy anemone in at 6 weeks but mine lived just fine. Maybe luck has something to do with it, but also the fact it was a condy anemone and not a seabae or carpet also helped. If I had picked one of the others I can almost guaratee I would have killed it.

my next coral planned is a pulsing xenia.... they're gorgeous and offer really nice color mix to the tank!

its my plan to make this a colorful tank.

any ideas on fish to add?
