Completed the swap over from sand to SMS on a 10g and was pleasantly surprised. I've heard of stories about SMS being tough to rinse off but this went rather smoothly. Only minimal cloudiness...much less that from the sand and with less rinse time and wayyyyy better than the fluorite was. Kewlness. Got it all planted so now we'll see how well it does.

So now my three test tanks (10g) consist of sand, fluorite and sms. all at ~ 2wpg with DIY Co2. Now to get some common plants to plant in all tanks at the same time.

I love playing evil scientist and conducting experiments.

The way I rinse SMS is to put it in the tank dry, slowly fill with water onto a plate or into a shallow container, then do a gravel vac or three... done.

Any cloudiness is usually gone in 24 hours.

Q

Soil Master Select. I have had good luck with mine, I think you will find that any plants tied to logs/rocks, in other words not stuck directly in the SMS will have a hard time as the SMS pulls nutrients from the water.

Also speaking as a biologist/chemist its not a good control to use DIY CO2, the levels of the CO2 can vary too much, but that's just me geeking out on you. :thm:Good luck with the experiment. I look forward to hearing about it.

The cloudiness cleared up in just a matter of hours. Pulled the media and rinsed it out...all good to go for clarity.

In regards to DIY CO2...are you saying that it is not needed when using SMS or referring to all together use?
