I am thinking of setting up a small tank just for shrimp and maybe a few snails. When i say small, i meen SMALL and it will be planted. What do you reckon would be the absolute minimum tank size? Also, how shall I set it up as I don't want to make any mistakes?

what do you wanna do with the shrimp just enjoy em as they run around, or do you want to have a growing colony?

As for the snails, a bridgesii snail (mystery snail) will grow to about the size of a golf ball and will need about 2.5 gallons per adult They come in many colors, striped and solid and have lots of personality. Nerites are smaller with less choice of color but (imo) cooler patterns.

As for the setup, I like sponge filters because they're simple and shrimp-safe. The important thing is to have the tank cycled and cover any filter intakes with a sponge or media bag so the shrimp don't meet an unfortunate end.

Depends on what you wanna do :)

I just want to enjy them really as i will have no room if they breed, as my main tanks are overun with shrimps as it is! The ones in the main tanks are to eat algae mainly but these will be for enjoyment.

a little 5g hex works great, and leaves room for your plants to grow up a little bit too

I have snowball shrimp in a 5.5g with two bridgsii snails and a beta. It's a great desktop size and seems to have plenty of room for the shrimp :)

I use sponge filters in most of my invert tanks. I like these. You would need an airpump or powerhead to power it. I guess it depends on what size/shape tank you end up with.

Ditto on that filter. I would not go much smaller than a 5 gallon as they will breed whether you want them to or not. ;)
