I am looking into possibly starting up an invert tank. Just a few shrimp, 1 brig, and ramshorns. I was looking at tanks and am not sure which is better. I don't have much room to spare so i think a 5 would be the most i could do. I was looking at an eclips 5 hex but i had a few questions. First, is a 5 hex ok for an invert tank? Is there any way to cover the filter intake on an eclipse? I've never seen an eclipse hood so idk. Would i be better off just getting a standard 5? I prefer the hex just because it has a smaller footprint so i could save some space, but if the standard 5 would be better i'll go with that.

I prefer the standard myself. If you can do a 5 g tank, you could do a ten g most likely..:)

I had an eclipse 5 hex and liked it a lot. I cover all my filter intakes by cutting a slit in a sponge made for AC filters and sliding it over the intake tube. IMO, it would make a cool invert tank.

i can't necessarily do a 5. its more out of necessity. i'm getting some dwarf puffers and found out i prob can't keep snails alive in either of my tanks because my tap water which i top off with has copper in it. so thats why i need it to take up as little space as possible. i would love to have a ten though.

Thanks jbradt. i do the same thing usually but wasn't sure if it was possible on an eclipse. Idk how the filter intake is.

Basically the standard tube with the slits in the bottom if i remember right. But it was quiet, and it seems that with the light bio-load of inverts, the filter should be more than adequate.

The other cool part of it is that if you aren't happy with the filter, that part of the plastic hood can snap out and you can put in a small HOB.

Sounds cool. Now i just need to figure out where to get ro water close by since i can't use my tap. The only lfs i have close by is petsmart and i don't think they carry it. Do they carry that kind of stuff in supermarkets or anything?

You can get it in supermarkets. However, have a test kit for GH/KH handy, as some lie about being R/O water. Make sure you pretreat, since it's the rare fish/shrimp that will be fine with just R/O. If it's planted, I recommend seachem equlibrium for the GH and baking soda for the KH.

Would those two things provide all the trace minerals i need to add? Or is there anything else i would have to add to the water? And what should the GH and KH be about for snails?
