Hi,
I'm getting back into freshwater aquariums after a 35 year break. I can see that many many things have changed, in the interim.

I'm setting up a 75 gallon tank, in my basemnent. Thus far, I have the tank on its stand, a Current Nova Extreme HO lighting fixture, some heaters, and a Eheim Pro II filter. I have no fish, no plants, no water, and no substrate. My hang-up right now, is what do I use for a substrate. I believe in having a heavily planted tank, and in the past, I just used what was then, common gravel as a substrate. My plantings were always great. That gravel doesn't seem to be available anymore and everything I've read lately seems to say that special substrates should be used if you want great plants.

I have hopes of setting up the tank within two weeks or so.

Nice to meet you all.

What substrate depends on how demanding the plants you are going to use are. I like soil substrates personally (eco complete, flourite, soilmaster select, etc). I would make a post in the planted tank section to get more info. A 75g is an awesome size fora planted tank! Can't wait to see what you do with it!

Glad to have you here!
