I was given a fairly nice size plant but it looks...well....kinda knarly. The roots are all upward and entwined with the leaves and such. I did seperate two small plantlets from the main plant but wondering if I should try to seperate the whole thing or just leave it alone? I wouldn't want it to suffer from seperation anxiety.

Cryptocorynes are hardy enough and you should be able to separate as much as you need. As long as there is some sort of root structure in tact for the plantlets to grow...

If it has separated into plantlets just plant them separately. If not, leave as is.

Guess I'll try and seperate it completely. Definately don't want to leave as is if I can get away with it. I did put it in the sand and icky. Well..it was free so I won't feel too bad if I mess it up. ;o)

I'll get a pic of it prior to the surgery.

Also, crypts don't really like being moved, and will sometimes "melt" just for spite. Don't worry - it should revive and grow beautifully.

mmm, sounds about right fauna. My Lutea is still melting after at least a week. So yes, crypts melt just out spite I think.

the patient has come out of surgery and hopefully doing well. when all was said and done...i found that there were 10 plantlets in this guy. didn't have to break anything...just had to unravel the roots. several have iddy biddy shoots showing as well. guess i should give them some rest time prior to finding new homes eh?

no, should plant ASAP.

And 10 is not bad, But I have like 3 clumps of C Lutea that has like at least 10 plants/plantlets EACH. Not to mention another clump in my 5g which has abot 5 er so. Some crypts are extremely good at propagating themselves.
