Briggs permits...

Well, I was reading a thread on applesnail.net about how someone just sent in for permits and the ones that already replied said that they didn't need permits for the briggs. Someone said that they were going to call Sherri in MD, but hadn't responded yet, and now applesnail.net has been down all day. Has anyone else heard anything about this? I wonder what would have made them change the laws, if they have, in fact changed them.

I'm really frustrated. I kept trying to access the forum there. I know which thread you were talking about. But apparently, this is not the first time they change laws without any notice.

Yeah, this isn't the first time it's been down, but this is the longest that I've personally seen it down. It doesn't get too many new posts in the week, but I still like to access everything when I feel like it. :/ Hopefully it's back up and running again soon.

If they did make it a change, I wonder what kind of an impact it will have...

One species complex of the family Ampullaridae, Pomacea bridgesii may receive a permit for interstate movement for sales in the hobby trade because these snails are not known to be agricultural pests. They are primarily algae feeders and sometimes are beneficial for ponds and aquariums.

That part of the site has me confused. I thought the entire point of restricting the briggs and making people have permits to ship was so that they didn't get into the environment, yet, I interpret the above statement as them condoning release into outdoor ponds. Wouldn't there be a decently high risk of them getting into the wild if they are put into ponds?

The reason they are restricted is that they are obscenely difficult to differentiate from other apple snail species before sexual maturity if they are of "normal" or "wild type" coloration.

Another question on the permit thing... Should I keep my permits for the snails that I had shipped in from another state? I held onto them because I wasn't sure. The only thing is that I'm also going to be getting some from another person in my state, and hopefully some from Ms (also in my state), and I also have two from the petstore. I just want to make sure that I keep my butt covered with my snails so that they don't take my pets...

yeah I couldn't bring myself to dump my snails out in some pond either, how are you supposed to say goodnight or read em a bedtime story if you do??

Since they are not at all restricted to own, i don't think you need to worry about keeping permits from snails shipped.

Nor do I. I just don't want to risk my brigs to other circumstances that might kill them or even become invasive. They're too valuable here since not many of us have them. As for the canas, I have no intentions releasing them. I'm just glad I have loaches at my disposal to help me cut back the population once I'm overwhelmed.:lipssealedsmilie:
