you either need a credit card or a bank account, though if you just have cash you can go to a grocery store or to a bank and buy a VISA gift card, which works like a credit card but you have to put the money on it first. Some places might take money orders (like from the post office) but then you have to deal with a longer wait and a higher chance of it getting lost, and not as much buyer protection.
How old are you?

Paypal offers buyer's credit, as well. A bank account is the most important thing to have when starting out. I'd suggest getting a check/debit card and only get credit if you know you can responsibly handle it. It can be a difficult trap to get out of.
