Completely redoing my 46 tank and will be incorporating angel fish. I'm building this for my pops. He is battling cancer and I think it helps him deal with it better when he is around the tanks. He likes lots of fishies swiming around. The two fish I know he wants are angels and upside catfish. What are good choices to throw into the mix?

I started out with two Angels and 8 Neon Tetra. They all started together at a small size. As they grew the Angels never looked at the Tetras as food. The Angels are now about 4" and could easily have a Tetra for lunch but they never seems to try. How about a planted tank for your dad? It seems like there's always something that can be done in a planted tank.

Generally not a good idea to place neon tetras in with Angels.
it works in some cases but in many others the neons will wind up as Angel Fodder.

you can use larger tetras like cardinals.

I agree. Angels are cichlids, they can be aggressive despite their name. Small fish like tetras or harlequin rasboras will most likely become lunch.

figure a nice little clan of cories would be a pleasure too. I thought about Kuhli's but they would seldom be seen.

Not sure on a clean up crew as I'm sure the angels would munch down cherry shrimps right? maybe a couple of amanos?

Looks like dwarf gourami's will be thrown into the mix as well. Just did some reading and they all appear compatible.

I'm letting him run with and so far he's picking up some good choices I think. He hasn't mentioned anything on the smaller side though which I'm surprised.

How would a group of harleys or serpea's do? Outside of the cory clan, there are no schools to swim around. Neons and danios are out. Cardinals might be a possibility.

Dwarf gourami should be kept solo as well, if you want a smallish peaceful gourami, try the Honey Gourami. They are a bright yellow and sometimes they get so vivid or bright yellow that they start appear red. In my experiences they are very peaceful with each other and stay small.

Imo, Rummynose Tetras are best schoolers, they stay together in nice tight groups, and once settled and fed they look awesome. Plus they get big enough to stay out of an angelfish's gut. But stay away from serpaes they can sometimes be too aggressive and get nippy with the angelfish's fins.

I agree with the rummy's. I had a school of them in the past. I called them nascar fish due to the checkered flag tail. ;o)

I went to the LFS today to get some fishies. Alas, only silver angels. Pops wants marble or zebra. No biggie, we can wait. We did pickup two upside down cats and a school of harley's.

Back to the angel front. I would like to get a nice number for the tank though. I've heard things from 1 to more than 3. I'm not looking to breed them either. If it happens, it happens. But then intent is to at least have one angel in the mix.
