hi all
well, finally netted my monster pleco out of my 40 gal, and am thinking of going in a new direction for my freshwater.
it is heavily planted, been up and running for about a year. lots of driftwood, java fern, anubias, swords, watersprite, water onions and banana plants.
inhabitants are as follows,
nice colony of japonica (20+)
6 ottos
1 redtailed shark (4")
3 marbled angels
4 candystriped gobies

i am not opposed to trading in the angels, so my question is.. what would you do?
i would like a school of tetras, which would be the best combo of coloration and hardiness, ie.. rummynose vs. cardinals vs. harlequin rasboras etc...
for a larger fish dwarf gouramis vs. blue rams.. what about young discus??

what about bottom feeders?? do away with the gobies and go with corydoras?? which species??

the driftwood is a large factor in the tank, so i am looking for a nice contrast to its reddish/brown color, the plants and light-colored gravel...

thanks for opinions and advice.....

I like angels myself. I would only trade mine in for some nicer fish because the ones I have are not very attractive and have obviously been breed in captivity for the last 50 generations.

Discus are a no-no for a 40g tank. Why even bother raising babies if you can't give them a suitable environment as they mature?

do you not like your current mix of fish?

Bray,
If you get rid of the angels, I would try a schooling fish. Maybe a school of rummy nose tetras, cardnials Or even some Rainbows.
See, i didn't even recommend any livebearers. :)

well, decided to trade in the angels (too much risk w/ neons) and purchased a dozen neons and 6 rummynose... guess what!! the damned gobies have been picking off the neons one by one!! what the hell is going on here? has anyone heard of such a predatory nature out of these fish? on recount, i have only two of the candystriped gobies left- about 2 inches long and pencilthin!

I always thought gobies were marine or brackish.
Sorry to hear about the neons. Maybe you should move the gobies to another tank.

i set up a planted 40 gal about two months ago. I have four rams, two blue gouramis, 2 super red turqoise discus, 3 cories, 3 glass cats, and two stingray plecos. I also have three bumblebee gobies that have been doing fine in the fresh water

ive never heard of gobies being predatory like that especially at such a small size
