I currently have a sump for my filtration and it has bio balls. When I switch over to FW, I was thinking of using small pieces of driftwood in the bio balls place. This would be for the bacteria to live and reproduce. Would this work or should I just use the bio balls?

I would leave the bio balls in. You would get some bacteria on the wood but the bio balls have more surface area for the bacteria.

Bioballs are great for FW also.

Yep, use the bio-balls. I use bio-max in a "sump" for my freshwater tank and have the driftwood in the tank. The bacteria will pretty much grow everywhere (e.g., plants, driftwood, substrate, bio-media), so you should be just fine.

Bio balls would be better IMO...plus, you already have them.

Yes, stick with the bio-balls.

I also have some driftwood in my FW tank and Bio-balls in my sump.
