I started a fishless cycle on my new 55g tank about 4 days ago. Loaded AM to 5ppm and have been waiting. I have an offer from a local with tanks for some used filter media. As I would love to speed this process along I am going to get it but my question is should I leave the AM levels high (as food for the bacteria on the material) or drop them low before I add the filter material ?

I'm thinking (yes, not my strong point and it sometimes hurts) that if the AM levels are high (5ppm) then the bacteria will have a good food source for a few days until I get the fish (since I'm not planning on getting the fish the same day as the material) but I'm interested in other opinions.

i would leave levels high especially seeing as you won't be picking up fish the same day
