I have a triple filter system in my 30 gallon tank: A Whisper 20, an AC 50, and an Aquatech 10 I fill entirely with filter floss to keep the water very clean. I only have a single 100 watt heater, and finally, a Penguin 550 to supply extra flow in my tank.

I have run (10) 30 gallon tanks on a common 50 gallon sump before. Planning played a big part, and friends in the plumbing biz helped.

All tanks 55 and over have double on filters and heaters....the 125 and 135s are actually tripled on filters....but with the new C-530 coming out, they will shift to one of them and one C-360. The free 360s will go to new tanks.

I usually use two heaters on my bigger setups and one heater on my smaller setups.
I upgraded from 300 watts to 400 watts on my 55 gal and it was overheating...So I removed one of the two 200 watt heaters I bouvht and went with a single 200 watt. The 200 watt alone isn't quite enough for parents' house temps. Will probably go with two 150 watt heaters during the next upgrade. The temps range from 50 F to close to 70F depending on if the furnace is running. It's a tough heating situation as the heaters need to heat during the 50 F temps and not overheat when the furnace is running.
I have three heaters on my 150, duel 300 watts and the 200 watt I removed from the 55 gal. Trying to upgrade here too since I'd rather this tank had all titanium heaters due to the synos tendency to burn themselves and knock heaters down. Once again I don't know if I need to go higher since the lights are on a lot...or if just newer heaters will mean I'll need less watts like with the 55 gal.
Extra filters are for when it's needed to keep the tank as low care as possible. This is useful for long distance as I don't have time to drive over and give these tanks a water change more then once a month. I actually have to plan a day to set aside for this, so it isn't always easy.
The 55 is over-filtered with three filters to the point where I'm happy with the setup.
The 150 could use a third filter as the canister gets awfully dirty by the time water change day rolls around. Problem is it's hard to place any extra filters on that tank because between the power filter and the canister the back slots are filled up.
I thought maybe I'd replace the power filter with a second canister, though long distance, power outtages and canister filters creating toxic conditions concerns me. So I will probably go with an extra internal filter now.
Due to family fighting and me separating from my parents for a while, both tanks went four months without a water change before.
In the 150 it was disaster as many of my parents' fish died and rotted away in the tank. I thought they had been re-homing their fish since they spoke of how much they didn't want them and were going to throw them onto the lawn unless I allowed them to live with my fish, until I siphoned the bottom and started to find fishy bones.
In the 55 gal, none of the fish died. Not wonderful and not something I had planned, but at least a test of what the systems can take.
I'd like my boarded systems to be over-filtered to the point where they could go two months without a water change. . Wouldn't leave them four months again if I can help it, but one never knows, the family fighting may get to that point again where I need to separate.
Not a lot of extra filters needed for the tanks here with me, most house a single male betta and are already low care because of this, only the main community tank gets duel filters. In fact the male betta tanks used to go without filters.
I'm aiming for them being able to go one month without a water change, the longest I've decided I'd leave on a job or internship before I'd return to check on them.
All tanks 4 feet long or larger I do multiple filters. All tanks over 75 gallons or larger I do with both multiple filters and heaters.

That's what I do as well. Rena XP1 with an AC 20 on my 30 gallon and an AC 70 with a Marineland 350 on my 55. Both have stealth heaters, but I don't remember the ratings...

I could go with just an Aquaclear 110 on my 55g, but having 2 filters does a better job keeping my tank clean. I also have 2 heaters b/c it does a better job heating the whole tank.

45g and 46g(same setup on both)---2 filters(Eheim 2128 and Mag 350), 2 heaters (Eheim 2128 and Stealth), and I just got a Vortex Diatom filter that I'm running from time to time.
I definitely subscribe to the idea of 2 smaller filters being better than 1 large.

My 46g bow front has 2 heaters. Mainly because the only place I could put it is close to a window and it's generally pretty cold in that corner so I wanted to make sure there wasn't too much temperature fluctuation especially on the side that's closest to it.

I have double heaters in my 65. Smart Idea since if one of the heaters malfunctions and stays on. It won't cook my fish.

I have always had 2 filters, 1 heater. MARINE LAND PENGUIN 350 and 200. I have lots of babies all the time, I want total clean water. with 50 percent water changes a week and these babies my tanks are kicking clean.
also 2 on my ten gallon, a penguin 150 and a very large sponge filter.

Hell... my 16 bow has two filters. Firm believer in redundancy when it comes to bio load and bacterial colony survival.

While I am a proponent of doubling heaters and filters, I don't actually have any tanks (right now) that are doubled.
I *should* have my 75 gallon set up soon, and that will have 2 heaters and 2 filters on it. The rest of my tanks are pretty small and doubling up would take up too much space. I'm hoping to get a second heater and filter going on the 44 gallon corner tank as well once the shuffling is complete, lol.
