I have lost one of my GBR from something that I cannot identify--not ick, not any visible pathogens. I have noticed my scaleless fish at times flashing on the wood and rocks and there is now a tuft of fungus on the dwarf gourami about the size of a scale (I'm thinking the scale is off this fish at this one particular spot). I am thinking that perhaps there is some type of parasite that is in the tank and as the GBR aged he was less able to fend off what ever it was that killed him. I don't think the GBR died of old age as he was lethargic, his slime coat was over productive and he developed a few tufts of fungus about a week before he died--it looked like his scales droped off in a couple of places and this is where the fungus tufts were located. The day or two prior to dying his body stomach area swelled up and then he died. I didn't QT him because I had no empty tanks at the time. Water parameters remained the same (pH-7.0/no ammonias/nitrites <0.03/and water changes of about 25% every week. I do throw in crickets and the occasional earthworm/bug for the fish. Everybody else seems okay--except for the loaches and catfishs' occasional flashing and the spot of fungus on the gourami.

I am thinking perhaps a parasite of some sort is in the tank. I have no proof--just thinking this because of the flashing that is going on. What would you all think about treating the tank with Kordon Ick Attack? It says its good for parasites, fungus etc and is organic and is not harmful to inverts (have shrimps and snails in the tank too). Any help/comments/suggestions would be appreciated. I tried to get a picture--but can't get the gourami to stay still long enough to get a shot of the spot.

I just recently used this stuff for an outbreak of ich in my tank. I followed the directions for a week and honestly my fish were miserable. they were constantly scrapping against stuff to the point of tearing their fins and causing damage to their sides. They also lost a lot of color and seemed lethargic. Eventually I couldn't stand putting them through the treatment anymore and did a 75% water change. They immediately improved and are acting normal. The ich did disappear but I'm hesitant to use it again.

With that being said I have read lots of reviews and not one has been the same experience I had. It could have just been a fluke.

Raise the tank temperature. Water change more frequently. and be patient.
