View Full Version : Snail ID
Hi all,
Does anyone know what snail is this? A friend of mine from Aklan, Philippines found this in the nearby creek. I have never seen this native snail before. The creek is FW often riddled with Pomacea canaliculata and occasionally Pila conica (if they don't get displaced first by the canas). I've asked for a close up pic of its head so this can wait.

Most snails are "right-handed", pond snails included.
I once bumped into this site while trying to ID the various Melanoides I had. Perhaps it could be of some help.

Hi Vampie,
Thanks for the link! I sent Mr. Philippe an email regarding the snail. Will wait for his response and post it by then if he has identified the snail.

**NOTE** This is just a reference, apparantly this is a proven scammer, so I can't recommend purchasing from them!
Looks pretty similar...

I doubt that's it. It seems unlikely that a US-native subtropical snail would also be native in the Philippines.

I was figuring that maybe it was in the same family or help bring us closer to the ID. The one on that site looks a little different at the end (where the snail comes out). The snail posted is rounded off, the one on the site has a more boxy end.

The entire Pleuroceridae family is US-native I think.
Lupin, have you heard a response from your friend yet?

Ah. I'm not savvy with any of the snail species, I just know a few of the apple snails.
Hi all,
I just checked my email but none from the recipient.:( My friend just told me it was low end brackish water so this could change the possibility of IDs.
I am very disappointed with the persons I've tried to email to. I decided to identify it myself and found out it is a Faunus ater, a native of the Philippines. Will see if I can obtain some specimens of these.:D
