I have a 125 with discus.
they are in with several types of tetras, clown loaches, SAEs some bamboo, and cherry shrimp.

I keep my tank about 84-86 degrees F.

I have several low, to mid light plants, like vals, crypts, cabomba, and swords.

You should really have no less than 5 discus in a tank, and it should be at least 75 gal for the 5..

zig.... discus dont need that high of water temp.

Most discus breeders reccommend 84F..
Juvies even warmer 86-88F

I am sure I could keep mine a little lower, like 82ish, but I have no problems with it this warm, and Ich cant live in it.

Generally, discus are kept at 82F-88F, I keep mine at 84F-85F. Cardinal tetras live well with discus, neons are ok. Cleanliness is more important than softness of water. Discus can live fairly well in harder water, some people have reported keeping them at 8.0 with no obvious problems. Other than for breeding, discus don't need particularly low ph or any buffers. No, you would be best served with 5 in that tank. Discus do not do well individually, nor do they do well in small numbers. (the only exception is breeding pairs, but I don't believe this thread intended to cover that) I would say 4 is an absolute minimum, but I wouldn't risk it myself. (been there, done that... didn't work well at all. I have 6 in a 55g tank)

Not sure if you folks have done much reading about discus yet, but there is a lot of work involved. (something like a minimum of two 50% water changes week, plus a very high protein meaty diet, feeding 2-3x daily) I tend to keep my tank in the 85-86 F range myself.

My 125 discus tank has 15 discus and is heavily planted. Tank mates should be chosen based on what your tank perameters are. Tank in to consideration temperature and Ph. Another issue that may be of some concern is agressive behavior. Discus do not compete for food so choose tank mates that are relatively passive. Schooling fish are great in a discus tank.
