USA lights cigarettes (like a marlboro but much cheaper). Down to a half pack. I should to quit for good when my stress level goes down. It was my neighbors cigarette that burned his, mine, and 2 other family's apartments to the ground.
I just quit! It's been a month, and its going really good! I feel MUCH better than I did while smoking. No more constant cough! yay!

I sure will, Ky.... you know, I tried this route before with Mr. Doll but ended up stopping treatment because he was having adverse effects from it.... I know, not a good reason for me to give it up but I did.... SO, when I started this time, I had to start with the starter packs again but this time, after taking the starters and back on the regular pills, it seems as though I am taking off from where I was before. It's pretty good at blocking the urges... if you can get past the first week without tearing off someone's head, you will be on the road to eventually stopping all together.

I have heard that Chantix works best for those that have more of the nicotine addiction...mine is a hand mouth thing....I will eat instead....and eat and eat....anyway, there is another pill for those that Chantix doesn't help. I can't remember the name of it though....ask your doctor ladyblues.....it might help.

This may be WAY off topic and if it is I am sure someone will make that decision;) but How are we for sure of the affects of medications when new meds are coming out everyday. For example trimspa-I know it was not regulated by the FDA (another off topic issue) Phen Phen, Paragoric (although it is no longer used) I know smoking causes cancer but how do I KNOW what the affects of these non-lifesaving meds are?

Actually planning on starting for the new year. My new year's resolutions always involve trying to quit certain things, and I always fail and feel bad about myself. I figure if I make a resolution to start doing things (instead of quitting things), I'm more likely to stick to it...
Anybody know a nice, smooth smoke for a beginner? Preferably a brand with a manly name.

Nonsmoker here, although I used to buy Djarum Black clove cigarettes whenever I was getting sick...numbed my throat better than cough drops and tasted better too :P. Don't anymore because my husband's strictly "Cigarettes are evil"...doesn't hurt my feelings since he's totally worth giving up a bad (and occasional) habit for. His anti-coffee stance is a little tougher to deal with...no kisses after I drink it!

Growing up with smoking parents and hating every moment of it....made me a pretty solid non smoker.
There are 4 kids in my family - 2 boys, 2 girls. One of my brothers and my sister smoke. So, out of us, there is a 50% smoke rate and it's evenly divided between the genders. I wonder if someone has ever done a study on how having smoking parents influences their children's smoking.
I started smoking when I was 13 and started trying to quit when I was 25. I smoked at least a pack a day for many years in between. Here I am now, about to be 31, and it's been 8 weeks since I bummed a smoke from someone--or even took a drag. 8 weeks is the longest I've ever gone.
Generally speaking, I try not to have regrets in life, but I 100% regret ever trying that first cigarette when I was 13.

I've been smoking 7 years and do plan on quitting. I quit for a year in 2006 but returned after a nasty breakup (stupid thing to do, but seemed appropriate at the time)
My best friend tried to "quit" on Chantix. Just like the scary side-effects and lawsuits say it can severely depress you. He did indeed become depressed and had some seriously messed up dreams about suicide and murder while taking it. He ended up smoking again until he quit on his own this year with no drugs or patches. I'm in no position to claim these drugs don't help you quit but I can tell you that it's very possible without them, also safe and free. I smoke Djarum Blacks, a type of clove. But only two to three a day, unless I'm out at a club or bar with smoker friends.
I don't really have an addiction, sometimes I'll go a week or two with out buying any at all, or if I am sick, I won't smoke either.
Is it just me or even being a smoker doesn't it pluck your nerves if someone is smoking too close to you while your eating?

I used to think that too when I smoked regular 100's. I then moved to lights 100's and the tried the regs, they made me choke.... changed to ultra lights and now I couldn't even fathom trying a regular now.... the lights, I can handle but at the end of the day, my chest is heavy...so yeah, while they are light, I try to think that they helped me get to a better position on quitting.... would this be correct thinking, probably not but it helps me. I don't smoke at work though so I can go through 9 hours stints and smoking at home, we smoke at the back porch... not in the house so with the colder weather coming, I am hoping to be done before it really hits. Smoking in the cold is not fun....
------------------------------------------------------------------
On Chantix... I never got the severe depression but Mr. Doll did.... I think I might have the dreams but not really sure if it's the chantix oor just me... I've always had weird dreams so it's nothing really different for me.

Soo if I spend 8 hours in a smoky bar, how many cigarettes did I smoke?
Quote:
"Studies conducted at the University Of California (javascript:void(0)), Berkeley, School Of Public Health shows that spending just two hours in a smoke filled bar is equivalent to smoking four cigarettes. Two hours in a restaurant equals one and a half. Eight hours in the work place (javascript:void(0)) or office that allows smoking is equivalent to six cigarettes and living with a pack-a-day smoker in the home is equal to you smoking 3 cigarettes."
Not sure if that can be proven, but I got it from this link:

8 hours in a bar, Cavie? Usually after 3 or 4 hours, I am as good as toast :D
(btw, in Jersey, there is a no smoking law in effect for the past couple years.... no smoking in public places such as eateries, bars, shopping malls.... they tried to lift it in the casinos but I guess it wasnt working out so hearing about a smokey bar is finally starting to sound weird to me)

My boyfriend smokes (but not in the house, his rule) and keeps going back and forth between wanting to quit and wanting to continue his habit. His dad quit smoking about 2yrs. ago after a 20-something affair with cigs, and now he dips. Blech!! He leaves little cups full of used dip around his house, in his truck, and it looks like someone defecated in them!

LOL "Sitting in a smoky bar" sounds so strange to me too. I'm from NY, and I think it was almost 10 years ago that NY instituted the smoking ban in public places. I am living near the VT/NH border right now, and VT has had no smoking in public places since I moved here, but NH (yes, the 'live free or die' state) only insituted the law about 2 years ago, a few months after I moved here. So when I first moved here, and went into a restaurant and was asked "Smoking or non?" my bf and I stared at each other in amazement lol. We were like, "Wow, I haven't heard that since I was a kid!" But yeah it's been over 2 years since I've seen someone smoking at a public establishment, and the thought of a "smoky bar" just seems strange to me now.

I've never smoked, both parents smoked. Dad died when i was 21,once he found out he had stomach cancer he stopped smoking, the time between diagnosis and death was only 3 months.
My mum has smoked since she was 13,she'd never try to give up,now she is in a care home with dementia, she's 66.She knows she wants a cigarette, but memory span is short so she barely smokes at all now, again too late for her also.
I have 3 sons,25,24 and 16,the 2 eldest ones started smoking when they were 13,i was so angry, the eldest gave up this year,it's been 5 months now,he did it alone I'm so pleased and proud of him,he feels so much better too. My middle son wants to give up but hasn't set his mind to it,hope he does achieve it also.Youngest doesn't smoke.
My hubby smokes also,he has lung disease, even being faced with the prospect of being attached to oxygen 24/7 doesn't seem to make a difference to his way of thinking, waste of time talking about it to him so now i don't bother.
I hope that those of you are trying to give up succeed, good luck guys :)

Currently a non-smoker. Smoked before I was pregnant, quit when we found out that I was pregnant. Can't guarantee that I'll stay a non-smoker, I started again (unfortunately) after my last pregnancy.
I smoked about half a pack a day, and smoked either Capri Ultra Slim Ultra Lights 120's or Misty Slim Lights 120's. Once in awhile, I'd smoke the Djarum Black, but at $6.30 a pack, I usually stuck with the cheaper Misty's (lower end of $3), and sometimes the Capri's, which are like $5 per pack. Hubby smokes USA Gold Lights, but used to smoke Marb Reds.

that's funny. i'm in NC, and in some counties that used to be dry (like Watauga County - there it is!), your food sales have to be higher than your alcohol sales, or you'll get warned/fined/shut down. i guess they're still so anti-drinking they don't want to have "bars", but they will allow restaurants that just happen to serve alcohol. but no bans on smoking yet - not in the tobacco state.

LOL, that's what made me realize I could quit. I was smoking 3/4 to 1/2 a pack at work every day. Went on vacation for three weeks and never smoked a one, took the same pack back to work. At the end of the day, I told the other shift supervisor this was crazy. I'd gone three weeks without one and then I smoked 1/2 pack in 12 hours and was hackin' and coughin'. Decided that was enough, smoked the last cig and haven't picked another one up since.

i used the Easyway book to quit smoking. finished reading the book, stopped cold turkey for 10 months. for most of that time i lived alone, so it was no problem - only an occasional visit from someone who smoked, not a lot of pressure at all. after i moved, i was surrounded by smokers at home and work, and my job was so stressful it gave me an ulcer. so yeah, i started again. i'd like to quit again, and when i'm really "ready" to do it, i'll know. i just still worry about being around it all the time though. it's much simpler to quit in isolation.

Unfortunately those are the same side effects from playing Mafia, so you'll never know if it's your meds or the game play that's giving you problems.

I smoked for 36 yrs and smoked 3 packs a day the past 5-6 yrs. I quit 9 wks ago. Hooray :-)) I used Chantix to quit with literally ZERO withdrawal, then quit taking the Chantix after a month. I don't think about them anymore unless someone brings it up, never had a craving and never felt so good in my life. The biggest mental difference? The utter relief that I finally quit. It feels like 10 tons off my back.

I would not have expected so many people still smoking in this day and age.
I'm OK with your choice just as long as you don't openly harass me me/ force me to endure your second hand smoke. Sorry polite smokers, I've had some bad experiences and I get headaches from tobacco smoke.

My dad had a heart attack last year (he smokes) and he's only in his late 30's. He still smokes. My grandma that's still alive smokes and has/had lung cancer. I will never smoke though I have friends that do. Trust me, I don't judge.

I have never smoked (17) and do not intend to try it any time soon. Who decided that breathing in smoke was a good thing, and what were they thinking at the time? For all you smokers out there on AC, good luck trying to quite (if you want to) and if you don't I hope you don't die of lung cancer or a heart attack until your at least 60...

None for me. Watched my grandpa hack up really gross stuff as a kid and he told us it was from when he used to smoke. That kept me from ever trying it. He did end up dying of lung cancer, but at 92 years old, I guess you gotta die of something at some point. So not exactly a poster for an anti-smoking campaign there. Still, I'm glad I never picked up the habit.

I used to smoke in high school after I realized that it was better to smell like cigarettes than anything else I might be smoking.

Still clean after quitting just over 2 yrs ago. I've pretty much made it past the point of no return. I no longer crave or think about cigarettes and hate the smell now.

I have never smoked even a puff, and I don't ever plan to change that. To those of you that do smoke, I wish you the best of luck in trying to quit. :)
If you don't plan on quitting, then I respect your choice even though I don't agree with it.

quitting now, havnt had a cig in 6 hours, gave 2 packs unopen and 7 cigs from my open pack to my neighber. got all the tabacco products out of the house, my upstiare neighber gave me a thing of febreez, reason im quiting is cause im tired of smelling like smoke and having the apt smell like smoke. and my chest dont feel right, gunna wait on that to see if it betters itself up. if not ill get it checked out, only been smoking for 3 hours but i could still have cancer ( which i hope i dont ) so only time will tell. so yea im quitting and hoping my apt can get smoke free and same with myself and better my lungs!

You will feel better.. I recommend getting nicorette gum. It will help with the cravings and part of the addiction to smoking is the oral fixation.. Chew lots of gum.. It helped me.

Not a smoker, and I've never wanted to be. My dad smoked, quit when I was little. My mom still smokes and I'm always nagging her about it but she just doesn't care it seems. She just shrugs it away, but I'm sure she knows what she is doing to herself. I'm trying to be supportive, but I'm just tired of it, ya know? My grandmother also smokes. She told me that when we went to FL (last feb) She only had so many cigs with her and when they were gone, that was it so we would come back to NJ, and she would have quite. First 15 mins we were home, she lit up. I was so dissapointed.
For all of those who quit and or are quitting, KUDOS TO YOU! :)

Marb red girl here. The one regret I can say I have in life, there may be many things I think were stupid for me to do but I can't say I regret because, those events are what made me who I am today :)
I plan to try quitting again very soon, just doing some research right now on a few things...thinking of trying the "safe smoke"

There are a couple people at my job who have those fake cigarettes. Probably the "safe smoke" you are referring to. They both have had good luck with it, so go for it! Good luck quitting. :)

I quit last year January first after 17 years of smoking. Its a mental thing. I now think of it this way:
I don't smoke! Not I gave up.
If someone asks for a light or a smoke I just say sorry I'm a non-smoker instead of I quit.
I quit the habit and quit referring to myself associated to the habit. It worked for me.

3 hours it will be my 3rd day without cigs, yea it is a mind over matter thing, well atleast to me, now everytime i want one ill just think of what my lungs will look like if they dont look nasty already, and just think of all the money ill have, i useally get a check every friday right, well i useally spend 20 a week on cigs ( 20 will get me 4 packs ) so now i can put that 20 away and start saving my cig money, works for me, some days i feel like caving in buuuuuuut i dont, ill prolly have one or two well drinking ( thats a habbit to smoke well i drink ) but wont afterwords ( wont by my own pack that is, just get from others lol ) but yea been 3 days almost!

Never smoked and never will. Good luck to everyone who smokes and is trying to stop. My parents quit before my birth and we are all from Eastern Europe where there is a larger percentage of smokers.

That's good to hear. Yeah, there are several different "brands" but the safe smoke one sounds the best to me because they have different levels and different "flavors". The start up kit (the one with everything) is a little pricey...but so is smoking, especially now :)
