How do you make them? I want it to be discrete.

my guess would by you take slate and place it in a cove formation on a barefoot tank then add the substrate on top of it?

The one in the picture you are refering to looks like a burried piece of driftwood which forms a cave.

I don't see any reason for Flourite to cause a sad face... if you are using dark slate or driftwood then flourite would probably help make the caves more discrete, not less.
I think I totally misinterpreted this question :)
Do you mean "discrete" as in "separate," like caves that are not joined to each other?
Or "discreet" as in "unobtrusive," like caves that blend into the rest of the tank?

you could simply take pvc add a thin layer of aquarium safe silicon and cover this with substrate.
bury it part way or cut the pvc (prior to coating)and push it partly into the substrate.

some plastics are aquarium safe. if you can manage to find the textured flat pieces, you can cut them into a sort of Ramp shape with an open front, then bury it in substrate to make an easily movable and sturdy cave. The hard part about this is finding plastic that matches your tank nicely.
