PetSmart carries Cardinals and if you are close to Ontario, Global Aquatics carries Rummys.

Buying a school of cardinal tetras at Petsmart is going to cost you a pretty penny. In Texas they are $4 a piece, but at a local fish store they are about $2-3 a piece. The difference adds up if your going to buy like 10 or more, but if your buying anything less just get Petsmart since they have a better return policy.

I bought cardinals at a petstore (dolphin pet village) and lost 6 out of the 13 so far. I went to petsmart and replaced those and lost NONE. Even in the past, my petsmart cardinals were 100% success rate. I know they're a fragile fish but petsmart seem to have the best of them all. Well, my petsmart anyway... (I went to 3 different petsmart to get cardinals, all had 100% success).
I have gotten 14 cardinals total from petsmart.
Most stores won't give you a guarantee, petsmart does and trust me, I wish I bought all of my cardinals at petsmart instead. I would've saved more money buying it all from petsmart with the guarantee than a store that had it for 3 dollars and end up losing half the population with no guarantee. Unless if you can find a 2-3 dollar per cardinal deal w/ a guarantee, then go for it! :)
It depends on who is overseeing the "pet care" department. I have worked in two of those "smart" chain stores. The first was newer, and the aquatics department had a beautiful set up. I never lost a fish I brought home from there. The second was much older, and the aquatics system was/is old and breaking down. There wasn't a whole lot we could do for the fish, given the state of the system. The fish were not as healthy.

The Aquarium in Culver City, CA
Jims Exotic Fish in El Segundo, CA
Neptunes Reef in Torrance, ca
Petsmart in El Segundo
Those shops I know for sure have them
Where are you in So Cal, btw?
I've bought Rummies from three places in the IE. The best place I have ever gotten them from was Pet World in San Bernardino, I've made 2 seperate purchases of 3 dozen and altogether have only lost 4-5 total.

you guys got some good luck. i bought like a few, and they were all alive for a few months. and one week, i come home, and ALL of them were missing =x in my massive planted 120gal, i dind't try to look for skeletons, pretty sure the shrimps picked them clean too.
I just got lucky with my last purchases, my first buys after tracking them down, were horrible. I sometimes would buy a dozen and lose 10 after a month.

I get that with my rummys, at the moment I have 4 and am trying to find an LFS with any in stock to try and increase the numbers. I think overall I have lost about 12 of them.
Yes, IME rummies are kind of fragile. I had my best results when I bought no more than 3 at a time, kept them in QT for longer and while in QT did a daily wc of around 75%. But they are one of my very favorite fish! They are the best schooling tetras I have ever seen. I think they look like little racecars running around the tank with their little red noses and black and white striped tails. :D
