I have the regular 10 gallon rectangular tank. The plastic part which holds the hood light broke, so I continued to break away the rest of the plastic. Is there any harmful or I guess you can say mechanic effects that could occur? The only missing part is the plastic that guards the light bulbs from the water. So now without the plastic the light bulbs are now exposed to the water. But I can just lower the water so the water would not be close.

Any concerns?

I have no clue what are you trying to say..

Something about florescent? And worried about "starter" (?????) Shocking fish? You mean electrical current from a Light Bulb will shock the fish?... Literally?

Be safe! Go to home Depot and buy a small piece of glass or plexiglass. I left mine expose to water and the light lasted about 1 week

No it is a dual 10 gallon lid, with 2 lightbulbs.

I actually don't use the plastic strips that covers the bulbs on my incandescent hoods (though I can't remember why in the first place...), and haven't come across any problems yet.

I am unsure which plastic strip you are talking about because the plastic strip I am talking about is not removable. Unless broken and manually removed by the person.

Incredible I could not Google the underside of the hood light -_-. So I took a quick photograph of the one I am talking about.

If it's the clear plastic strip between the light and water, I'd be worried about evaporation and condensation collecting on the bulbs and dripping on the sockets.

So the only supposed problem that could happen that it could short out my hood light due to condensation?

I mean the hood itself fell into the tank(while on), and it still works. It actually dropped twice on accident..... pretty versitile hood :S.

Fell in the 5.5 gallon tank seeing it was not supported by anything and easily can just pop into the tank if hit the slightest.

i would just go on ebay and buy a cheap hood to replace the broken one and call it a day and not mess with exposed bulbs exploding from water getting spashed on them. why risk it when to fix it properly is a very cheap option.

Yeah, I would be cautious of that. Just find some place to cut you a piece of plastic and drop it in. Easy fix :)

Isn't there another plastic piece on the actual strip light that came with the hood. I got one of those (or very similar by AGA) and it came with the plastic piece that broke on yours and another one. If yours did you should be fine with one layer protecting it. If not, I'd follow their directions because its better to pay the 20 bucks or whatever instead of losing your fish.

or just go a replace it with a glass top. they look nice, aren't priced too bad, and give you the option of adding more light later if you want more live plants.

Just slip in a piece of plexi or regular glass and then set the lights over it.
